Position Description
The Department of Molecular Biology & Microbiology at Case Western Reserve University seeks outstanding candidates for two tenure-track faculty positions within the School of Medicine at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level. We are seeking exceptional candidates who can seize the unique opportunity to establish an internationally recognized, competitively funded research program in HIV/AIDS research. Rank will be commensurate with experience, funding history, and scholarly accomplishments.
Founded in 1826, Case Western Reserve University is a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio, known for its pioneering research and innovation. The university, the site of the famous Michelson-Morley interferometer experiment, and associated with 16 Nobel laureates, reflects its long-standing commitment to excellence in research and education.
Research Opportunity
The Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology hosts the Rustbelt Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). The CWRU/UHMC CFAR, continuously funded since 1994, forged a strategic alliance with the University of Pittsburgh and received its first joint funding as the Rustbelt CFAR in 2022. The Rustbelt CFAR has an impressive annual NIH-funded research base of $46.4 million, reflecting the exceptional research programs from both institutions. The Rustbelt CFAR supports robust clinical and innovative laboratory cores and a vigorous Developmental Awards program.
A cornerstone of the CFAR is the Uganda Core C, which operates advanced virology and immunology laboratories at the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) in Kampala, Uganda. This core has long been the centerpiece of the CFAR’s international efforts. Recent generous gifts to CWRU have been used to establish a state-of-the-art research hub, educational, and gathering place in Kampala: The Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Roe Green Medical Education and Research Building. Kampala-based partners include Makerere University, the Ministry of Health, the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC), Mulago Hospital, Uganda Heart Institute, Uganda Lung Institute, and Uganda Cancer Institute.
Additionally, the Department hosts the NIDA Center for Excellence on the Impact of Substance Abuse on HIV, which grew from our rapidly expanding portfolio of NIDA-funded programs. The Center for Excellence includes 11 NIDA-funded investigators from the CWRU School of Medicine and our partner hospitals. Qualified candidates will be encouraged to take leadership positions within the CFAR and the NIDA Center.
The Department also maintains close interactions with the Center for Global Health and Diseases at CWRU. This Center provides a coordinating structure to link the numerous international health resources of the university, its affiliated institutions, and the Northern Ohio community in a multidisciplinary program of research, training, and clinical application related to global health.
