General Summary

Works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager of Cancer Services and the Lead Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Tech/Purchasing Analyst’s primary job function is to assist the pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of hazardous and non-hazardous medications. The Pharmacy Tech/Purchasing Analyst will also coordinate and manage the inventory with current medication care plans, free/replacement/white bagging medication supplies, and analyze of purchase prices for pharmaceuticals and supplies for the SOMC Cancer Center in an efficient and effective manner. Processes will be consistent with good quality and vendor service and aligned with the Main Pharmacy processes in an effort to provide the best, price efficient possible product to the patient. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
  • Enrolled in, completion of a board approved Pharmacy Technician training program or National Certification required

Licensure:

  • National Certification required, -or-
  • Successful completion of Qualification test within 1 year of completing board approved Pharmacy Technician program required
  • BLS/AED within 90 days of hire required

Experience:

  • Pharmacy Technician training program or certification or prior technician work experience required.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time. 

  1. Prepares prescribed medications using proper sterile technique and according to label.
  2. Prepares doses of medications under prescribing oncologist and communicates with pharmacists.
  3. Checks EMR for upcoming appointments to assess medications needed for ordering.
  4. Controls inventory levels of medications and pharmaceutical supplies, to include return of unwanted or unacceptable goods.
  5. Analyze and comparing drug and solution pricing. Subsequently orders and stocks drugs for all Cancer Center departments. Ensures that drugs are ordered on the correct account type in accordance with 340B Policies and Procedures, utilizing 340B and GPO accounts to their maximum potential to reduce spending.
  6. Communicates drug shortages with Cancer Center clinical staff and works toward a resolution to avoid a disruption in supply
  7. Researches new drugs to find availability and completes new account set up for Cancer Center. 
  8. Reviews all invoice prices for accuracy and reports pricing errors to ASB. Request credits and rebills if necessary 
  9. Reconciles all orders to invoices, unpacks, sterilizes, stocks and properly stores all received medications and supplies. 
  10. Codes all drug purchases to the correct cost center and approves payment. 
  11. Scans all invoices and sends to A/P in timely manner to avoid late fees. 
  12. Communicates with Cancer Center Pharmacist and SOMC couriers to ensure hazardous drugs are delivered timely to main campus pharmacy
  13. Maintains EMR knowledge and applicable work list items
  14. Responsible for general cleanliness of work area/department.
  15. Maintains adequate files and purchase records to allow for long and short range purchase planning. 
  16. Maintains refrigerator temperature, room temperature, pressure and humidity logs of pharmacy area. 
  17. Maintains outdates of all drugs and pharmacy supplies in Cancer Center stock and emergency boxes. 
  18. Manages free medication, replacement medication, and white bagging inventory, reorder, and documentation of such.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned

The following duties are only to be performed by a Qualified or National Certified Pharmacy Technician

  1. Prepares I.V. solutions, hyperalimentations, doses of medications for dispensing for pharmacist, and/or small volume parenterals using proper sterile techniques and following USP 797 and 800 guidelines. 
  2. Engage in the compounding of any drug following USP 795, 797, and 800 guidelines
  3. Package or label any drug following USP 797 and 800 guidelines
