Overview

NATIONWIDE SEARCH: CHATHAM, NJ (LOCAL CANDIDATES PREFERRED) – A lovely family with one developmentally disabled 28-year-old son (who easily looks like a child at 96 lbs.) is seeking a unique FULL-TIME LIVE-OUT SPECIAL NEEDS CAREGIVER to join their household! He is developmentally disabled, with no specific diagnosis, and requires daily medical treatment. He exhibits no aggressive behavior whatsoever. His parents are fighting two chronic illnesses of their own, so they need someone to step in and care for their son in ways they can no longer. He is an exceedingly loving guy with a great personality and a sense of humor. He loves everyone, and everyone loves him!

The family needs someone who is flexible regarding hours worked each week.  All hours would be scheduled between 8AM-8PM, typically Monday-Friday, but some weekend support may be required on occasion.  Total of 40 hours per week guaranteed.  You will be responsible for engaging with their son in all his activities of daily living. These include things like organizing his medications, preparing meals, running errands with him, helping him do his laundry, and engaging with him in conversation, games, and walks.

In terms of medical support, he receives daily nebulizer treatments and has Type 2 diabetes managed with daily insulin injections and a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor that provides 24/7 digital alerts to caregivers. He also has an ileostomy and a MIC-KEY button. His ileostomy bag needs to be emptied throughout the day, and the area around the MIC-KEY requires daily cleaning. 

Emotionally, he may experience anxiety when plans change or when he’s unsure of what to expect. It is important for the caregiver to offer clear communication, preview daily routines, and allow him to make choices when possible to help him feel safe and in control. The right candidate will be calm under pressure, emotionally intuitive, and capable of providing both structure and warmth. Positive reinforcement, patience, and consistency are essential, as is the ability to set gentle but firm boundaries.

They are looking for an extremely nurturing, responsible, and detail-oriented individual. While a medical or nursing background is a plus, it is not a firm requirement—what matters most is a willingness to learn and be trained. Equally important is someone who is punctual, dependable, and committed to a long-term role. The ideal start date is as soon as possible!

Candidates must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record, a reliable vehicle for transportation, and have experience working with people with developmental disabilities. Pay is dependent upon experience up to $100k + relocation assistance + PTO, health insurance and paid holidays provided.

Qualifications

• BA/BS COLLEGE DEGREE | AA IN RELATED FIELD OF STUDY | OR A MINIMUM OF 5+ YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL NANNY EXPERIENCE
• UP TO DATE FIRST-AID & CPR CERTIFICATION (WILLINGNESS TO RENEW AS NEEDED)
• THE ABILITY TO MAKE A ONE-YEAR COMMITMENT UNLESS APPLYING FOR A TEMPORARY POSITION
• A PASSION FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN
• 5+ YEARS OF CHILDCARE EXPERIENCE IN ANY FIELD
