This individual will partner closely with Development Sciences scientists to structure, capture, and integrate diverse CMC data, enabling automated workflows and data-driven decision making. Based in South San Francisco, this role plays a critical part in bringing strategy to life at the ground level, working directly with scientists across biologics and select agent spaces to implement workflows, digitize data capture, and ensure that digital tools are embedded into daily practice. With strong leadership support and growing site demand, the Senior Scientist will be the on-the-ground driver translating high-level vision into practical solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead hands-on execution of CMC data projects, including digitization of workflows, integration of disparate data sources, and implementation of FAIR data principles.
- Partner with Scientist and Leaders across the full spectrum of drug development to understand decision-making needs and ensure critical scientific data is captured, structured, and reusable.
- Collaborate with data architects, IT, and platform owners to enable connectivity of scientific data across ELN, LIMS, SDMS, and instrument-based systems.
- Act as a project leader to scope needs, define requirements, and deliver workflow automation solutions that directly support scientists in groups such as drug substance, drug product, and cell line development.
- Manage diverse stakeholder expectations, effectively engaging both senior leadership and bench scientists to drive adoption of digital tools.
- Troubleshoot and problem-solve in real time to ensure smooth execution of data workflows and portfolio initiatives.
- Communicate progress and benefits of digital transformation locally, fostering a culture of data sharing and continuous improvement.
- Travel approximately 25% of the time to AbbVie’s Irvine site to ensure alignment across teams and support portfolio delivery.
Qualifications
- PhD in a scientific discipline (Analytical Development, Biologics, Process Development, or related CMC field) with 4+ years of relevant industry experience; Master’s with 10+ years industry experience; or Bachelor’s with 12+ years industry experience.
- Strong domain expertise in CMC workflows (cell line development, cell culture, analytical development, process development, or formulation development).
- Demonstrated hands-on experience implementing digital / data solutions at the lab or process level; not only strategy design, but practical execution.
- Familiarity with ELN / LIMS / SDMS platforms (e.g., Benchling, IDBS, LabWare) and data integration approaches across scientific instruments and systems.
- Working knowledge of workflow mapping tools (Visio, Lucidchart) and data wrangling or automation languages (Python, R, SQL).
- Experience with data visualization tools (Spotfire, Tableau, Power BI) to translate raw data into actionable insights.
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional technical and non-technical stakeholders, manage multiple priorities, and deliver projects to completion.
- Excellent communication skills with proven ability to influence across levels of the organization.
Why This Role Is Exciting:
- Join a well-established Digital Transformation program with strong leadership support and clear strategic importance.
- Play a pivotal role in shaping AbbVie’s data-driven future by embedding digital workflows at the bench level.
- Work across highly innovative biologics development teams in South San Francisco and Irvine.
