IT Area Lead

We are looking for a seasoned IT Area Lead (ITAL) to help elevate our Data Management & Analytics organisation. In this pivotal role, you will collaborate closely with your ITAL peers in Hubs Romania to lead platform reliability, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure the delivery of high-quality data. You will also drive strategic initiatives such as the development of Data Products, the decommissioning of local data lakes, and the future migration of the WB Global Data lake to public cloud.

You’ll foster a culture of technical excellence and innovation, enabling teams to unlock the full potential of data and support ING’s ambition to be a data-driven organization.

The Team

Data is at the heart of ING’s Think Forward strategy. In close partnership with the Chief Data Office (CDO), the Data Management & Analytics area ensures data is governed, controlled, and of high quality—while nurturing a data-driven mindset across the organization.

In collaboration with your peer ITALs in Romania, you’ll lead a global workforce across Netherlands, Romania, Poland, and India. The team spans ~170 professionals and manages 17 IT assets.

Key Responsibilities

• Shape and execute the Data & Analytics strategy in collaboration with business, CDO and other ITALs, while aligning IT landscape with ING’s broader data vision
• Provide technical leadership and grow the craftsmanship of IT Chapters
• Collaborate effectively in a matrix organization to drive optimal outcomes across the global organization
• Coach your team and other leaders to drive leadership growth in all locations
• Develop and engage internal and external talent, fostering a skilled and motivated workforce.
• Ensure predictable delivery by Squads, meeting quality, resource, timeline, and feature commitments
• Oversee IT custodianship and delivery of business value
• Build organisational capability by evaluating team skills, identifying gaps, and implementing development frameworks
• Manage budgets across software, work packages, personnel, and services
• Ensure reliable operation of IT assets, meeting KPIs and service level objectives
• Drive IT automation and continuous improvement initiatives
• Partner closely with ING Hubs globally and SSI partners in India to deliver value for stakeholders

• MSc in Computer Science or a related field.
• 5+ years in IT leadership roles.
• Expertise in Data Management and Analytics.
• Understanding of Wholesale Banking and customer use cases.
• Skilled in vendor management (software and consulting).
• Strong senior stakeholder management capabilities.
• Banking knowledge is a plus.
• Passionate about developing technical talent.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Technologically curious and up-to-date with industry trends.
