Schedule is Monday through Friday during daytime hours with occasional nights and weekends for events and competitions.

Atrium Health Sport Psychology is searching for a qualified Sport Psychotherapist (SP). This position provides consulting and outreach services primarily to collegiate (DI) student-athletes and coaches, and coordinates with athletic trainers and other administrative personnel, to serve the psychological well-being of individual student-athletes and team members.

The SP will provide access to quality sport psychology and mental health care by educating, diagnosing, discussing and treating mental, emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as provide mental training. Issues may include, but are not limited to stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, substance abuse, injury and rehabilitation, depression and suicidal ideation, burnout, trauma and abuse, and eating disorders. In addition, the provider will conduct team workshops and training for athletes, coaches, and sports medicine teams.  

The SP will primarily serve the athletes and teams at a local DI (ASUN Conference) University in Charlotte, providing services on campus. Services are expanding to other universities in the surrounding area. Emphasis is placed on group and individual counseling for clinical issues as well as mental training and mental health workshops for teams. 

In addition, the Sport Psychotherapist will facilitate the building of an out-patient clinical sport psychology practice serving the athletes of Charlotte and surrounding area colleges, clubs, and high schools.

Preferred candidates have an Acceptance & Commitment Therapy background, are CMPC via AASP, have experience providing services to collegiate athletes, experience with eating disorders, performance anxiety, depression and adjustment issues. 

Pay Range

$30.15 - $45.25

Essential Functions

  • Develops, implements and evaluates patient care according to identified needs.
  • Manages clients in crisis utilizing appropriate therapeutic skills and assessment techniques.
  • Writes appropriate treatment plans according to patient diagnosis, age and clinical presentation. Writes appropriate discharge plans based on individual needs of client and follows through with termination process.
  • Collaborates with appropriate guardians and community agencies to insure effective service delivery.
  • Completes patient care assignments with attention to detail and accuracy. Provides accurate and consistent documentation of patient care/response in the medical record. Completes accurate and timely billing information.
  • Designs, plans, implements effective patient education.
  • Maintains open lines of communication, collaborates with healthcare team for patient outcome.
Physical Requirements
Works in patient care areas including hospital units, emergency room, individual offices and conference areas with exposure to potentially combative and hostile patients. Work requires frequent moving from one area to another, answering pages, and coordinating and communicating with other staff persons in various disciplines and agencies.



Education, Experience and Certifications

Master's degree in a relevant human services field such as Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or Marriage and Family Therapy from an accredited school of graduate education required. Full licensure in applicable state required. 2 years clinical experience required. CPI and CPR training required for psychotherapist working in inpatient psychiatric setting.
