Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Research Engineer at our Research & Innovation Center in Middletown, Ohio. The Research Engineer specializing in laboratory corrosion testing, part and sample analyses, material qualification, and making recommendations for improvements of steel product performance.

Summary Of Responsibilities:

  • Run the Corrosion Laboratories at the Research & Innovation Center (RIC), which include environmental chambers, benchtop capabilities, high temperature oxidation and electrochemical equipment.
  • Design, set up and run corrosion tests
  • Perform various benchtop laboratory tests such as intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement and electrochemical corrosion evaluations
  • Assess and characterize results of corrosion tests, including susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement
  • Lead corrosion-related investigations including samples from production, customer production parts, returned client samples and failed client parts
  • Provide detailed technical reports on corrosion test results and analyses. Maintain thorough records of all analysis, data and test setups
  • Support steel product development and commercialization by generating corrosion-related data for engineers, customers, and product literature
  • Research and evaluate new technologies, equipment and methodologies related to corrosion analysis. Identify upgrades and new equipment to corrosion testing capability within the RIC
  • Write and maintain operating procedures for corrosion test equipment
  • Support plant production test laboratories as necessary
  • Participate and represent Cliffs in ASTM, AIST, NACE and other technical committees related to corrosion
  • May require up to 20% travel to Cliffs’ plant locations, customers, and conferences
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience or a master’s or PhD degree in Corrosion Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience and understanding of corrosion testing methods and material properties of carbon, stainless and electrical steels
  • Proficient in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in LabView
  • 5 or more years of experience
