SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:
The Food Safety Coordinator (FS Coordinator) is responsible for reviewing documentation in accordance with Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) Code of standards and regulatory & statutory standards for the Food Safety Management System (FSMS), releasing product and reviewing lab data on products. Always adheres to all United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), safety regulations, as well as Company rules. The Food Safety Coordinator may be assigned as the site Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI), the SQF Practitioner and/or the SQF Quality Practitioner. In the absence of the FS Coordinator, the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Supervisor will manage duties and responsibilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Communicates with plant management.
• Review HACCP System and Food Quality Plan documentation.
• Reviews and enters data from various outside laboratories and releases product as appropriate.
• Completes Certificates of Analysis for fluid and dry products.
• Completes customer questionnaires, tracks sample requests, and responds to other customer requests.
• Operate equipment including spectrometer, FTIR analyzer, moisture analyzer, pH meter, and various testing equipment. Assist with calibrations and functionality of lab equipment to ensure precise and accurate analysis.
• All equipment is to be operated in a safe, efficient, and sanitary manner.
• Fill out required worksheets and logs in an accurate manner.
• Maintain all results and report in a confidential manner in accordance with the Company Letter of Confidentiality.
• Communication of results to the proper individuals in a timely, confidential, and professional manner.
• Cover off hours shift when needed.
• Recognize and notify FSQA Manager, and appropriate supervisors of any unusual results or product defects. Perform the necessary re-checks for analytical and microbiological testing.
• Aid in training of new Quality Assurance personnel.
• Be proficient in the performance of the following:
• Inhibitory test
• Total solids/Moisture Analysis.
• Inventory sample analysis
• Powder test for scorched particle, and moisture.
• Whey Protein Nitrogen Index test (WPNI).
• Bacteria test (Aerobic Plate Count, Coli, , Yeast & Mold).
• Obtain proper series samples as required.
• Compositing samples for third party testing.
• Proper identification of outgoing samples for third party testing.
• Report immediately to supervisor of any damage, irregular activity, or unsafe conditions concerning the equipment.
• Follow all safety, work, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) rules.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
• Member of the Food Safety Team and Food Quality Team.
- SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This position has employee supervisory responsibilities for the QA Foreperson(s) and QA Technicians in the area of discipline, hiring, and firing.
- Conduct on the job training reviews.
- Conduct job performance evaluations.
- Oversee on the job training.
- Oversee adherence to company policies and procedures.
- If there are employee problems, report issues to FSQA Manager, HR manager, FSQA Division Manager, and Director of Food Safety, Education, & Technical Services.
- Have the responsibility of calling in employees if needed to cover a shift.
- Responsible for supervising, overseeing, training, and reporting on the processes above.
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Must work in a safe, efficient manner and follow all safety procedures including the use of safety equipment.
- Must have the ability to troubleshoot small problems and be able to discern when issues may require input from levels of authority within the corporation.
- Must be willing to ask for assistance when the process is unclear.
- Leadership, team development, coaching, and/or teaching experience.
- High degree of organizational and administrative skills.
- Advanced computational skills and advanced math reasoning required.
- Must be able to operate the equipment effectively after the appropriate break-in period.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
• Must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dairy Science, Microbiology, Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, or related field or comparable experience in dairy laboratory testing in five (5) out of the last ten (10) years.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
• Must be able to acquire a Certified Sampler license by the state regulatory agency.
• Must be able to be licensed as Certified Industry Supervisor in accordance with the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (current edition) and state regulatory agency.
• Must be able to acquire a Preventive Control Qualified Individual (PCQI) certification.
• Must be able to acquire GFSI: Safe Quality Food (SQF) Practitioner certification.
• Must be able to acquire Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification.
