The Opportunity
This position works out of our location in Wiesbaden (Abbott GmbH) in the Core Lab division.
As the Manager of Manufacturing Engineering, you will lead a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the maintenance, optimization, and strategic advancement of manufacturing equipment and Abbott diagnostic instruments. Your responsibilities will include overseeing engineering compliance functions such as calibrations, asset management, pest control, and cleaning protocols.
This role is critical in driving innovation, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance across all manufacturing processes and equipment. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including R&D, Quality, and Operations—to deliver impactful engineering solutions that support Abbott’s manufacturing objectives.
In addition, you will play a key role in identifying strategic initiatives, shaping long-term engineering plans, and leading change management efforts to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with business goals.
What You’Ll Do
- Lead the Manufacturing Engineering, Instrument Engineering, and Engineering Compliance teams.
- Oversee calibrations, asset management, pest control, and cleaning processes.
- Manage strategic programs for new equipment implementation and manufacturing process development (e.g., filling, leak testing).
- Lead the integration of cybersecurity best practices into engineering processes, ensuring compliance with the EU NIS2 Directive.
- Collaborate with R&D to upgrade and develop Abbott instruments.
- Direct a multi-disciplinary team of engineers from concept through manufacturing launch and lifecycle support.
- Design, plan, and construct new manufacturing equipment and installations.
- Maintain site manufacturing equipment to ensure continuous functionality and conservation of value.
- Develop and implement engineering systems and procedures to ensure compliance with FDA, GMP, ISO 9001, and other regulatory standards.
- Lead deviation management, investigations, and corrective actions related to manufacturing equipment.
- Ensure operations meet all applicable quality system and regulatory requirements.
- Promote environmental protection and workplace safety in alignment with Abbott’s goals.
- Own the Manufacturing Engineering cost center, program budgets, and project cost centers.
- Prioritize initiatives and allocate resources effectively to meet business needs.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives aligned with lean principles and customer-focused processes.
- Provide training and coaching to improve standard work, work center organization (5S), and housekeeping.
- Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous learning.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Engineering (Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics).
- Relevant experience based on education level:
- Proven engineering and technology expertise, with a strong foundation in manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills in cross-functional and international settings.
- Experience with lean manufacturing techniques, value stream mapping, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Innovative mindset with the ability to generate ideas and apply new technologies, particularly in automation and digitalization.
- Fluent in English and German, with strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
- Willingness to travel up to 15%, including internationally.
- PhD: 3+ years
- Master’s: 5+ years
- Bachelor’s: 7+ years
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Background in medical device/equipment design.
- Strong project and process management skills.
- Experience in regulated environments (e.g., FDA, GMP).
- Familiarity with cross-functional collaboration and global operations.
