Position Summary
This individual will provide strategic HS&E support to the project and region while learning and assisting with daily safety needs related to the success of the overall corporate HS&E program. This role is focused on shadowing the local HS&E leadership and the project management teams to assist in administering project training programs and conducting job site safety and environmental compliance reviews. The HS&E Intern will learn how to implement a research driven safety program while spending significant time in the field with the teams performing daily work. Applicants must be self-driven, have the desire to learn, and an excitement to interact and communicate with project field personnel. The HS&E Intern must show an eagerness for working in the construction safety environment and enjoy interacting outside in all types of weather. Must be open to travel and have an aspiration for the hands-on experiences that will contribute daily to the continued advancement of Orion’s exemplary safety culture.
Specific Responsibilities
- Works with the Regional HS&E Manager, Corporate HSE Department and the Orion project management team to establish and achieve HSE objectives for the Company’s Safety and Health programs.
- Participate in training at safety meetings, tool box meetings and orientations.
- Build knowledge about all federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to safety and health issues and assists in compliance in each of these areas.
- Assist in promoting safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with all Federal, State and Local regulations and owner/contractual requirements.
- Assist HS&E Manager and/or Superintendents in preconstruction meetings and conduct research as needed. Document those meetings under direction of supervision.
- Assist in maintaining safety records, including pre-task plans, Job Hazard Analyses, training records, tool box meetings, maintenance of the SDS and chemical inventory sheets, incident investigations and metrics.
- Must be qualified and physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and job sites.
- All employees, current and former, must maintain confidentiality by not disclosing to others any confidential, proprietary or trade secret information belonging to the Company.
- Responsible and accountable for incumbent’s own personal safety.
- Responsible and accountable for the safety of all co-workers and any others the incumbent comes in contact with.
- Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or is observed.
- Complies with all applicable laws, regulations and Company policies and procedures, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.
- Reports any and all violations of applicable laws, regulations or Company policies and procedures promptly, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.
- Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).
Position Requirements
- Working toward a four year degree in BS Degree in Safety and Health Management, Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience, with a minimum of two (2) years of education and a basic knowledge of safety/environmental principles and techniques.
- Capable of identifying known potential exposures and recommending corrective actions.
- Computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office suite programs.
- Personable, outgoing, competitive and driven to lead.
- Outstanding speaking, written and interpersonal communications skills.
- Goal driven, results orientated, also well versed in critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- The ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- This individual must possess strong organizational skills.
- Ability to obtain TWIC card and travel throughout the greater USA and foreign countries.
The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. Failure to do so can result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Construction work history preferred.
Physical/Mental Requirements
The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s) or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
In addition, the incumbent must also be capable of:
- Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters
- Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time
- Working in confined spaces
- Working at elevated heights
- Lifting objects up to 50 lbs. as required
- Carrying 50 lb. objects as required
- Adapting to extreme temperature changes
- Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure
Compensation:
This position makes $22/hr.
