About The Role

Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service (WACHS) is an Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation that aims to empower Aboriginal people to take control of their individual, family, and community health and wellbeing needs through our clinical and community programs.

Our main services are in Wellington, Dubbo, Western Sydney, Penrith, Nepean, and Blue Mountains, and we provide outreach services to other towns and communities through our regional programs.

The Aboriginal Community Support Worker provides direct patient contact and clinical support in the area of Maternal and Child Health under the New Directions Mothers and Babies Services Program.

The Program is committed to quality activities aimed at improving Indigenous health in the Wellington LGA.

Key Responsibilities

• Refer clients to Maternal and Child Health/New Directions Programs

• Promote activities for age appropriate development including pamphlets for parent education

• Discuss and promote developmental issues including safety, growth and development

• Provide health checks and client support as required as part of the Healthy 4 Life/New Directions Mothers and Babies Service scheduled programs

• Manage effective data capture processes and recording of patient information on relevant clinic software, ensuring security and accurate filing of all client files/records

• Support clinical and other programs as required

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of respect for and compliance with culturally appropriate ways of working with Aboriginal individuals, families and communities

• Perform other duties as required by the Team Leader or Executive Manager

Selection Criteria

• Aboriginality

• Hold either Certificate III in Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care OR Certificate III in Community Services OR willingness to obtain a qualification

  • Previous experience in providing services to Aboriginal Communities and a thorough working knowledge of health issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to Aboriginal culture and history, and current issues affecting the lives of Aboriginal people
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of Primary Health Care
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective internal and external workplace relationships
  • Well developed organisational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to undertake required professional development
  • Respect for individual rights and self-determination
  • Upholding ethical standards, respecting colleagues and clients, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring a safe and fair work environment.

  • Current Working with Children Check
  • National Police Check
  • NSW Driver’s License
  • Covid 19 Vaccination – minimum 2 dose
