Digital Operations Principal Engineer

Job Description

• We are looking for a hands-on architecture leader to design and deploy the MyBL Super App in a modern microservices environment and to help build a hyperscale backend stack that serves millions of users reliably and securely. You will own end-to-end technical decisions for our digital platforms (apps, APIs, backend services) and lead mixed in-house/augmented squads to ship fast, without compromising stability, cost or security.

• What You’Ll Do:

• Own the architecture: Define and evolve target architecture for MyBL and digital platforms; drive the microservices modernization (observability, resilience, configurability, scalability).
• Build at scale: Lead design & development of backend services, public/internal APIs, data flows and platform components that are secure, testable and cost efficient.
• Translate needs to designs: Turn business requirements into scalable solution designs, capacity plans and integration patterns across OTT, VAS and partner systems.
• Raise the engineering bar: Enforce code quality, testing, CI/CD, SRE/operability standards (SLIs/SLOs) and security-by-design aligned to VEON policies.
• Lead squads & partners: Guide in-house engineers and partner teams in an Agile setup; remove blockers, review designs, mentor engineers/architects.
• Optimize TCO: Continuously improve performance, reliability and cloud/infrastructure spend through profiling, refactoring, automation and right-sizing.
• Bachelor’s/Master’s in Computer Science, Software/Computer Engineering, or IT (or equivalent experience).
• 8–10+ years in large-scale software/Platform engineering with ownership of production architectures serving high traffic.

Required Capabilities

• Strong microservices design & implementation (e.g., Spring Boot / Quarkus / Node.js / Go, service mesh, API gateways, event streaming).
• Solid backend/API engineering (REST/GraphQL; gRPC a plus), relational & NoSQL data modeling, caching and asynchronous patterns.
• Cloud proficiency (AWS/GCP) including containerization & orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), IaC, CI/CD.
• Security, privacy, and compliance mindset (threat modeling, secrets, least privilege, dependency hygiene).
• Proven experience leading Agile squads (Scrum/Kanban) and coaching engineers.

Nice To Have

• Telco / large consumer app background; exposure to TMF APIs or telco BSS/OSS integrations.
• Data/observability tooling (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, Splunk, ELK, tracing).
• Performance engineering at scale (capacity planning, load testing, chaos/resilience practices).
• Experience with API monetization, rate limiting, and partner integration frameworks.
• Familiarity with Python, NiFi, gRPC, GraphQL, and modern build systems.
