The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for the Postdoctoral Associate, Senior Postdoctoral Associate. The title/rank will be contingent upon the selected candidate's skills and experience in their area of expertise.
Postdoctoral Associate:
- Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
- Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by December 2025. Related research experience in atmospheric observation and data analyses.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field. Experience in cloud and atmospheric boundary layer observations, modeling, and data analysis, or in Raman and Doppler lidar system development. Strong software development background with programming experience in Python, C++, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.
Brief Description of Duties (Postdoctoral Associate):
The selected candidates will join the Atmospheric Remote Sensing Group, a leader in innovative multi-sensor atmospheric remote sensing from ground, airborne, and satellite platforms. Our group develops advanced algorithms and data analysis methods to address fundamental scientific challenges, including global cloud distributions, cloud microphysical properties and processes, dust aerosol distributions and impacts, and atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) structure and dynamics.
In recent years, we have focused on advancing airborne lidar technologies. The Multi-function Airborne Raman Lidar (MARLi) and Airborne Doppler Lidar (ADL), supported by NSF, provide simultaneous measurements of water vapor, temperature, wind, aerosol, and cloud profiles within the planetary boundary layer (PBL) from the NSF/NCAR C-130 and G-V aircraft and the University of Wyoming King Air. MARLi and ADL now serve as NSF Community Instruments and Facilities (CIF) to meet the atmospheric science community’s needs in the PBL (link). They have been successfully deployed in multiple large-scale field campaigns, spanning from the Arctic to the tropics, creating a unique dataset for studying PBL processes and clouds.
There will be two positions. Under direct supervision, the Postdoctoral Associate will focus on analyzing these campaign datasets to investigate cloud processes, particularly mixed-phase clouds, and boundary layer dynamics OR will concentrate on advancing MARLi and ADL system capabilities and supporting their operations. Both positions will involve collaborations with a broad network of external partners.
- The successful candidates will have a proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team and have excellent communication and scientific writing skills in English.
- Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:
● Using predetermined scope and methodology, use airborne remote sensing and in situ measurements to study cloud properties and processes (especially mixed-phase clouds) and their interactions with boundary layer process OR improve MARLi/ADL observation capabilities or develop new lidar capacities and support field data collections.
● Prepare, write and publish scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
● Contribute to the writing of scientific proposals.
● Other duties as assigned
