TxDOT's Lufkin District is looking for a Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief in the Nacogdoches County Maintenance Office. As a Crew Chief, you will coordinate equipment, materials, and personnel for roadway maintenance projects and work closely with the maintenance section supervisor. Experience gained in this position can provide opportunities for advancement within the department.

Position Description
Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize response of crews; responds after hours, on weekends, and holidays outside of the scheduled on-call schedule.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses And Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to noise and vibration
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching bending, kneeling, crawling on various surfaces without falling
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
- Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
