Job Overview:

The Yard Master Supervisor is tasked with management of the yard operations. This includes the scheduling, ordering, repair, maintenance, and disbursement of equipment and supplies to ensure efficient yard operations. The role requires organizational and operational skills to oversee yard activities and personnel effectively.

Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and coordinate the daily activities of Yard Masters and other yard personnel, ensuring efficient operations.
  • Review schedules, switching orders, and shipping records to coordinate the availability and utilization of equipment.
  • Manage the placement and retrieval of trailers from warehouse bay doors according to shipping schedules and equipment availability.
  • Delegate tasks and provide clear directions to team members, enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Responsible for the hiring, coaching, and training of workers. Develop work objectives, perform regular performance appraisals, recommend changes as necessary, and ensure disciplinary actions are taken when required.
  • Analyze and implement yard safety protocols, maintaining a secure and safe work environment.
  • Conduct routine and non-routine maintenance on equipment, inspect for defects, and arrange repairs as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments, investigate accidents, identify root causes of damage, and implement corrective measures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED with some college coursework is required. A two or four-year degree is preferred, reflecting a commitment to professional development.
  • Experience: At least two years of supervisory experience in a production-oriented environment, with a preference for backgrounds in automotive, inventory management, or warehouse operations. A proven track record of effectively hiring, training, and managing staff to meet company objectives.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in operating yard equipment, with loader experience preferred, showcasing the ability to manage yard operations hands-on.
  • Exceptional customer service attitude and skills, emphasizing the importance of maintaining positive relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, necessary for effective team management and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Computer proficiency, enabling efficient management of schedules, records, and maintenance logs.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in scheduling, equipment management, and safety procedures.

Physical Demands:

  • Continuous Supervision: Frequent walking and standing to monitor yard activities, inspect conditions, and ensure smooth operations.
  • Manual Handling: Occasional lifting, moving, and carrying of equipment and supplies, potentially up to 50 pounds, for setup or adjustment.
  • Environmental Conditions: Working outdoors in various weather conditions, overseeing yard operations, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Climbing and Reaching: Use of ladders and reaching for equipment or materials as needed for maintenance or operational tasks.
  • High Alertness: Maintaining high levels of concentration and situational awareness to coordinate movements of vehicles, equipment, and personnel.
