Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.
Job Description
CNBC has an opportunity for a News Editor responsible for driving news flow and handling a variety of news assignment desk operations.
What You'Ll Do:
- Manage news flow on the assignment desk including breaking news, source reporting, keeping track of incremental story updates, working with on air control room teams, cnbc.com counterparts, reporters and field producers.
- Coordinate reporters, field producers and other personnel covering assigned news stories.
- Work closely with senior editorial team and shows to coordinate coverage of daily news events, maintain lines of communication to adjust coverage plans as news develops
- Set up and coordinate live remotes
- Work closely with the senior editorial planning team to develop coverage of individual news stories and longer-term news series
- Develop relationships and work with business partners from external news sources to gather reliable and factual information for use in story coverage
- Work with reporters and producers to develop news stories and sidebars, as well as coordinate with other departments to complete stories and projects
- Manage assignment desk schedules and help navigate beat reporter coverage
- Copy edit and fact check scripts
- Create and coordinate short-range planning to meet news department editorial goals.
- Work closely with anchors, reporters and producers to identify and craft breaking news headlines
- Take quick and decisive action on headlines
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or related years of experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience working in a television newsroom
- Some previous work experience requiring organization, leadership, copy editing and journalism fundamentals
- Must be able to work weekends
Desired Characteristics:
- In-depth knowledge of CNBC’s content and subject material and a strong interest in financial markets, economics, technology and politics
- Ability to thoroughly edit copy under tight deadlines and identify mistakes, errors and typos
- Previous experience in business news
- Understanding of global financial markets and how events in different economies and markets affect each other
- Ability to multitask and remain calm in a fast-paced news environment
- Ability to work as part of a team and across all departments and locations
- Excellent verbal communication skills, coupled with strong research and succinct writing skills
- Demonstrated self-starter, with the confidence to make decisions quickly in a fast-paced news environment
- Knowledge of social media, wire services and financial statements
- Flexibility in hours
