Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Technical Sales Engineer to join the team from our site in Manchester. This role will provide sales support to Customers, within a Sales Team (and the external John Crane Sales & Service personnel who support them).

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES / KEY TASKS - 

  • To select our products and produce high quality, technical/commercial, timely Quotations/Bids (and revisions) for any product using the company quotation tool (C4C). This could be variable in content and level for example - 
  1. A simple Price and Delivery for known product
  2. Complex bids for Product (involving selection of multiple products from given duty / application data and/or Customer equipment detail)
  3. High value bids for potentially a mixture of Product and Service.
  • To be able to assess additional information needed to accompany a bid
  1. Literature, Where-Used Information,

  2. Relevant prior referenced experience, 3rd party commentary,
  3. Calculations of key technical outputs relative to the particular product, using JC calc tools
  4. General Arrangement drawings, sketches, P&ID or other pictorial representations,
  5. Alternative selections, offers and/or options to the prime selection,
  6. Reasoned argumentation of Features/Benefits to assist in ‘selling’ of the product/service
  • The production and maintenance of a system to track the background to a bid/quote
  • · Able to reason and justify the value of the bid, if requiring management sign off.
  • To accurately review/capture Customer Specifications, ensuring all technical, commercial, financial, quality & contractual aspects are identified and select product.
  • Project Bid liaison with our Central Projects Group.
  • The maintenance and update of databases in use within this role
  • To resolve in a timely manner any queries related to Customers/JC personnel.
  • To deal professionally with the needs of the Customer, taking full responsibility and accountability to ensure they experience exceptional Customer Service at all times.
  • Provide first point technical support for key initiatives, bids, orders, specification reviews, returned goods investigations, complaints, etc received from the Customer.
  • Accurately load and contract manage complex orders onto differing supply plants.
  • Able to specify and raise requests for proposals or general arrangement drawings.
  • Customer visits as and when required in support of sales initiatives
  • PREFERRED CAPABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Secondary Accountabilities / Key Tasks

  • Partake in all other Team activities that assist the Customer and the company.
  • Costing Activities as and when required and in agreed timescales.
  • Assist on internal/external Quality audits and procedure manual updates.
  • The main conduit between the Internal/External Sales teams supporting the Customer and our Engineering Dept/Engineers for updates/changes to Product line.

Qualifications

An individual who has the knowledge and experience to multi-task at a high technical level, in a professional manner with excellent customer-facing communication skills.

It is preferred that the successful applicant:

  • Can read/understand mechanical/process datasheets, P&ID’s, OEM equipment drawings
  • Has an understanding of industry standards/specs and their application eg: API, ASME,
  • Has some form of degree (e.g., BSc, BEng, HND level in some technical discipline)
  • Possesses knowledge/understanding of fluids, pressures, temperatures, viscosities etc.
  • Has knowledge of materials, process of manufacture and advantages and disadvantages.
  • Has experience of preparing comprehensive technical bids

  • Have excellent pro-active communication skills at all levels in the Company and with the Customer, written and verbal.
  • Be respectful towards the demands of the business, company and decisions it takes.
  • Discuss applications and technical solutions / options and alternatives with client.
  • Think on their feet and adapt to differing situations that may arise in Customer dealings.
  • Ability to adapt to change and drive it through the role and the department/company
  • Able to make decisions whilst considering and protecting the company
  • Able to learn quickly and to pass on knowledge to colleagues
