Purpose:

The Machinist II, under general supervision serves as the lead machinist for the mechanical engineering department in the joint machine shop shared with the physics department and the mechanical engineering rapid prototyping studio. Will instruct and supervise mechanical engineering students on safe use of equipment and will provide assistance to the staff and students regarding fabrication of parts. Fabricates, maintains, and repairs metal parts, tools, and equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads training sessions on manual shop equipment, CNC machines, and related software.
  • Provides technical assistance to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Provides instructional support to undergraduate students in the machine shop and rapid prototyping studio.
  • Performs semi-complex jobs of a mechanical nature.
  • Manufactures parts from steel, aluminum, or other materials from drawings, prints, or from verbal instruction to a required tolerance.
  • Manufactures parts consisting of gears, all makes of threads, shafts, adaptors, jigs, and fixtures to very close tolerances.
  • Manufactures, fits, and assembles parts.
  • Orders parts for machine shop use.
  • Provides support to laboratories and performs necessary maintenance on lab equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned

What We Need:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and sketches.
