About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2019, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Power Systems Modeling Engineer, Energy Storage

Essential Duties:

You will be an early member of the Redwood Energy engineering team, taking a hands-on role in the design, development, and integration of second-life battery-based energy storage systems. As the first Power Systems Modeling Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and validating dynamic behavioral models of various power system components.  This includes development and maintenance of official dynamic models for grid interconnection studies at both the converter and plant level.  You will also be responsible for integration of controls and software systems and validating their behaviors.

Redwood Energy has already deployed the largest solar + storage microgrid in North America, but this is only the first step. If you’re excited about designing the GW-scale, inverter-based resource grid of the future we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Building models of 100 MW to GW-scale AC and DC power systems, including power converter models, energy management and site controls.
  • Evaluate system-level requirements and translate to dynamic performance and controls specs
  • Build and maintain reference models for Redwood’s components to allow customers, utilities, and other stakeholders to include Redwood’s products in their modeling.
  • Collaborate with our project engineering team and our customer’s engineers and site-specific analysis.
  • Study and analyze compliance requirements for grid-codes (IEEE2800, UL1741) and protection schemes (arc-fault, ground-fault, etc.)
  • Perform failure-mode & effects analysis (FMEA) to discover design weaknesses and devise mitigation strategies.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, fast-paced startup culture, where every team member plays a crucial role in achieving company milestones.

Desired Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field and 5+ years of experience modeling power systems
  • Familiarity with inverter-based systems and common inverter and DCDC topologies.
  • Experience with RMS (PSS/E, PSLF) and EMT models (PSCAD) required for grid-interconnection studies.
  • Strong foundation in electrical principles, circuit theory, and control systems
  • Proficiency in controller design
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards

Working Conditions:

  • Environment, such as office or outdoors
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time
  • Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing
  • Occasional work weekends, nights, or be on-call as a regular part of the job
  • Occasional travel requirements
