About The Role

We are seeking a skilled informatician who is ready to join our Bioinformatics team at the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) as an analytical technician for a six-month fixed term position from January 2026 until mid-July 2026.

Reporting to the Bioinformatics Technology Manager you will:

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of APAF's strategy, taking a role within the specialist stream of Bioinformatics
  • Work with clients and APAF staff to develop and implement optimal Bioinformatics solutions and analysis, ensuring that they operate in a robust, accurate, cost effective and timely manner
  • Contribute expert advice for the day-to-day operations, projects, initiatives and resourcing for Bioinformatics, ensuring a highly professional and effective service is provided to clients, team members, users and stakeholders
  • Maintain knowledge, expertise and currency in sector trends and developments within Bioinformatics, working with stakeholders and the team to incorporate best practice and build protocols, capability and services.
  • Assist in implementing, documenting and testing informatics methods, tools and capabilities
  • Assist in validation and verification of tools and analyses to be used in NATA-accredited testing.

About You

You’re a versatile and detail-oriented professional with a foundation in software development, data science, and bioinformatics. You thrive in collaborative environments and bring a thoughtful, systematic approach to every project you tackle.

Essential

  • Degree (preferably a postgraduate degree) in bioinformatics, information technology, data science or related discipline, preferably with a deep understanding of systems biology, proteomics and/or protein analysis
  • A track record of designing projects and delivering effective bioinformatic/statistical solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills—you can easily translate complex technical concepts and collaborate with experimental scientists.
  • Practical experience in scripting languages, for example R, python or bash
  • Proven work experience in bioinformatics, statistics and/or data science relevant to proteomics and protein analysis, including using and implementing key analysis tools.
  • Adept at juggling multiple projects and delivering results on time.

​While the above is essential, experience in the below areas would be highly regarded:

  • Experience using GitHub to for version management and collaborative development.
  • A proven process for designing and executing systematic test plans for software.
  • A strong track record with code interpretation, including the ability to explain complex code logic and create clear, comprehensive technical documentation.
  • The ability to create compelling data visualisations and building tools to support them.
