The Opportunity:
The growing share of power electronic interfaced generation (solar PV, wind) and devices (HVDC, STATCOMs, BESS) in modern power systems introduces challenges such as undesired oscillations caused by converter-grid interactions. To address this, various analysis methods—time domain, small signal, and frequency domain—have been proposed, along with computational tools developed by multiple institutions.
Transmission System Operators (TSOs), particularly in Europe, now require studies to ensure new converters do not cause adverse interactions. This creates a need to apply existing methods to demonstrate compliance with TSO requirements.
This thesis aims to develop a framework for converter interaction stability analysis aligned with TSO expectations. It begins with a review of state-of-the-art mathematical tools, focusing on frequency domain approaches like impedance- and passivity-based analysis. Available tools will be evaluated for their strengths and limitations.
How You’Ll Make An Impact:
- Review and compare frequency-domain tools such as impedance-based and passivity-based approaches.
- Analyze TSO requirements and acceptance criteria across Europe.
- Develop and validate a Python-based framework for interaction studies using generic converter models and test networks in PSCAD.
- Propose quantitative indexes that ensure compliance and stability.
- Develop a Python-based computational framework for performing interaction studies.
- Simulate test cases in PSCAD using generic converter models and representative grid scenarios.
- Evaluate and benchmark analysis methods (e.g., impedance-based, passivity-based) for their effectiveness and limitations.
- Live Hitachi Energy’s core values of safety and integrity, taking responsibility for your actions while caring for colleagues and the business.
Your Background:
- Master’s student in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.
- Strong interest in power electronics, grid stability, and control systems.
- Familiarity with PSCAD and Python programming.
- You possess strong motivation, problem-solving skills, and the ability to complete tasks.
- Proficiency in English language, both written and spoken.
