The Opportunity:
Join Hitachi Energy’s Power Consulting team in Gothenburg for your Master’s thesis focused on evaluating simulation models for flicker and harmonics in modern power grids. As renewable energy and industrial loads like arc furnaces increase, power quality challenges such as flicker and harmonics become more critical.
Your work will compare simulation results from DIgSILENT PowerFactory (RMS and EMT) with Hitachi Energy’s internal PSCAD model, which uses detailed control algorithms for STATCOM flicker compensation. While the internal model isn’t publicly available, simplified PowerFactory models offer a practical alternative.
You’ll model an arc furnace and a STATCOM, simulate their interaction, and assess flicker and harmonic performance. The goal is to quantify how well commonly available tools replicate vendor-specific results and recommend best practices for grid studies.
How You’Ll Make An Impact:
- Model power system components including electrical arc furnaces and STATCOMs using DIgSILENT PowerFactory in both RMS and EMT simulation modes.
- Conduct time-domain simulations to analyze flicker and harmonic behavior under various grid conditions and control strategies.
- Compare simulation results from PowerFactory models against Hitachi Energy’s internal PSCAD model to assess fidelity and performance.
- Evaluate control algorithm impact by quantifying differences in flicker damping between simplified and detailed STATCOM models.
- Develop recommendations for using publicly available simulation tools to assess flicker performance in compliance with grid codes.
- Document findings and methodologies, with the potential to contribute to a technical paper summarizing the study and its implications.
- Living Hitachi Energy's core values of safety and integrity means taking responsibility for your own actions while caring for your colleagues and the business.
Your Background:
- Master’s student in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.
- Strong interest in power quality, grid simulation, and control systems.
- Familiarity with simulation tools (PowerFactory, PSCAD) is a plus
- Analytical mindset and ability to interpret complex system behavior.
- You possess strong motivation, problem-solving skills, and the ability to complete tasks.
- Proficiency in English language, both written and spoken.
