Position Description
Database Engineering
Trek’s Infrastructure Engineering team runs a hybrid estate spanning on‑prem SQL Server and Azure (including Azure SQL Database Hyperscale). We’re standardizing observability on Grafana + Loki, modernizing automation and CI/CD, and migrating selected databases across our environments. You’ll help operate, secure, and evolve these data platforms for mission‑critical apps (including BI/ERP/JDE and other enterprise systems).
This role is part of a collaborative cross-functional team that spans infrastructure engineering, development, and functional areas, and supports Trek’s global headquarters in Waterloo, WI.
Responsibilities
Operate & optimize databases
- Administer Microsoft SQL Server (on‑prem/Windows Server) and Azure SQL (Hyperscale and/or Managed Instance) across our environments
- Tune performance end‑to‑end (indexing, plan analysis, Query Store, waits, I/O) and deliver measurable improvements on targeted workloads.
- Manage capacity and cost (compute sizing, file layouts, storage growth, and backups/retention).
Reliability, HA/DR, and change
- Engineer and run HA/DR (Always On AG/FCI, replication, log shipping) with defined RPO/RTO; execute quarterly DR tests with complete documentation.
- Plan and execute database upgrades and migrations (on‑prem, Azure, version upgrades) with minimal downtime and clear rollback.
- Patch, harden, and maintain fleets with automation and low rollback rates.
Integrations & Analytics (plus)
- Support and enhance SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages and scheduling/orchestration patterns; help modernize or migrate when appropriate.
- Administer and optimize SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS): processing strategies, partitioning, and cube model performance.
- Qlik Replicate:
- Skilled in installing, configuring, and administering Qlik Replicate with expertise in CDC, endpoint management, and task monitoring.
- Proficient in managing Qlik Replicate to ensure reliable real‑time data replication, supporting seamless integration.
Observability & Incident Response
- Stand up and maintain database health dashboards in Grafana; centralize SQL logs into Loki; author actionable alerting.
- Participate in the on‑call rotation; triage incidents quickly, lead/assist RCAs, and close the loop with documentation.
Collaboration & Enablement
- Work closely with application teams, ERP/JDE stakeholders, BI/Analytics, and Cloud/Network/Systems engineers.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal guilds/tech talks.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience
- Proficiency in T‑SQL and SQL Server internals (query plans, indexes, waits, DMVs, transaction log, tempdb, concurrency).
- Hands‑on experience with Azure SQL (Hyperscale/MI preferred): connectivity patterns (Private Endpoints), backups/restore, security, monitoring.
- HA/DR experience with Always On AG/FCI and DR testing; clear understanding of RPO/RTO and failover mechanics.
- Operational excellence: backup/restore strategies, patching, access control, and documentation.
- Scripting/automation with PowerShell and T‑SQL; Git workflows (branching, PRs, code reviews).
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL and/or MongoDB concepts and tooling (enough to complete onboarding and basic operations).
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams including Infrastructure, Security, BI, ERP, and Business users
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document procedures, train users, and explain technical concepts
Additional Skills
- Systems & networking fluency (big plus): Comfortable troubleshooting across layers: DNS, routing, load balancers/WAF, proxies, TLS/PKI, firewalls/NSGs, Private Endpoints, and hybrid connectivity.
- Qlik Replicate: CDC patterns, endpoint sizing/tuning, job reliability, and monitoring/alerting; experience integrating Replicate logs/metrics into Grafana/Loki.
- SSIS & SSAS: Package lifecycle and performance (SSIS), Tabular/Multi‑D admin and model tuning (SSAS).
- Automation & pipelines: GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins; database CI/CD with SSDT/Flyway/Liquibase; test automation for schema changes.
- Observability: Grafana (panels, alerting), Loki (log pipelines), exporters/agents for SQL metrics.
- Security: Always Encrypted with secure enclaves, Azure Key Vault/Managed Identity, RBAC design, auditing, and least‑privilege patterns.
- Data platform breadth: SQL Server replication, Postgres streaming replication/partitioning, MongoDB sharding/replica sets.
- Infra & networking: Windows Server 2022, storage fundamentals, DNS/PKI, Private Link, firewalls/NSGs; performance across hybrid links.
- SRE mindset: SLA/SLO design, error budgets, incident command, post‑incident reviews.
Tools
- Databases: SQL Server (on‑prem & Azure), Azure SQL Hyperscale/MI; exposure to PostgreSQL/MongoDB.
- Automation: PowerShell, T‑SQL, (optionally) Python; Terraform.
- CI/CD: GitHub (primary), Azure DevOps/Jenkins (during transitions).
- Observability: Grafana, Loki (logs), (optionally) Mimir/Prometheus exporters.
If you like wild growth and working with happy, enthusiastic over-achievers, you'll enjoy your career with us!
