Position Description
As a member of the Highway Safety and Operations Group in Project Delivery Section, performs traffic engineering work in addition to providing technical assistance, guidance documentation, training, and support to the districts and other division staff, in the planning, development, and review of highway & intersection capacity analysis, traffic simulation, safety modeling and analysis, associated with preliminary (schematic) design, Intersection/Interchange Evaluations, Interstate Access Justification Reports (IAJRs), Design Exceptions, and other project development processes and documentation supporting preliminary through final project design. Work closely with other groups and sections of the Design Division such as Design Support, Landscape (Pedestrian and Mobility). Actively engage with districts and other divisions. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level work under the overall supervision of team lead.
NOTE: All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment.
Essential Duties:
Engineering Assistant I:
- Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams, andcompletion/maintenance of required documentation.
- Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.
- Collects engineering data at project sites.
- Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program, which includes job rotation, training, andcontinuing education.
- Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.
- Performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering.
- Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluation, and analysis activities.
- Performs traffic analysis and data collection.
- Uses automated design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Engineering Assistant Ii:

- Performs research and problem solving of engineering-related problems.
Engineering Assistant Iii:
All The Above And:
- Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants.
- Reviews engineering work for calculation errors and compliance with applicable federal and state laws and industry

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience:
- None
- Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent
Acceptable Substitutions:
- Master's degree in engineering or a Master of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
