The Windows Cloud division is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help elevate Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and Windows 365 Cloud PC (W365) to new heights.

AVD and W365 were recently recognized as leaders in the inaugural Gartner Magic Quadrant™ for Desktop as a Service (DaaS). These services offer organizations a modern, scalable, cloud-based Windows experience.

If you're passionate about solving distributed systems challenges and building high-scale infrastructure, this role offers the opportunity to design and implement critical platform features that directly impact the scalability, reliability, and performance of our cloud services. You’ll deepen your expertise in areas such as cloud compute, desktop virtualization, large-scale storage, and microservices architecture. You’ll collaborate with a diverse team of engineers to build new platform capabilities across virtualized compute, storage, and networking—enhancing the value we deliver globally.

Responsibilities

  • Lead architectural discussions and design efforts for product and solution components.
  • Create design documentation and lead validation of proposed solutions.
  • Mentor others by modeling best practices and producing extensible, maintainable code.
  • Optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance and maintainability.
  • Identify and promote best practices and coding patterns.
  • Design and develop large-scale distributed software services.
  • Drive modern engineering practices through design and code reviews.
  • Define system interfaces across components and use data/telemetry to inform decisions.
  • Ensure services are modular, secure, reliable, diagnosable, monitored, and reusable.
  • Improve test coverage, implement integration tests, and resolve issues.
  • Consider testability, portability, reliability, and maintainability in code readiness.
  • Gain a working understanding of Microsoft’s business and contribute to cohesive, end-to-end user experiences.
  • Focus on customer and partner needs using a data-driven approach.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • 3+ years of experience designing, implementing, and shipping cloud services or software products.
  • 3+ years of experience with distributed systems delivering large-scale, secure, and resilient cloud services.
  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Broad experience and track record of working across teams to deliver shared solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to quickly ramp up, understand complex problems, and create solutions across many products. 

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
