The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Butler University invites applications for an Instructor in Physics with an anticipated start date of January 12, 2026. This is a one-semester position only and does not qualify for visa sponsorship. The successful applicant will be eligible to apply for a 2-year lecturer position that will start in August 2026.

Candidates with a Ph.D. in Physics or Astrophysics are preferred, although candidates with a Master’s in one of these disciplines will receive consideration. We seek a colleague who demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and who can work both independently and collaboratively to build an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population. Ideal candidates will be equipped with strategies for effective teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students with a variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences, including those underrepresented in the sciences. This is a teaching position with no contractual expectation of research or scholarship.

Teaching duties will consist of two sections of an introductory algebra-based Physics course including a lab for each section, as well as an additional Optics lab.

Applicants should submit the following: a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, a statement of teaching philosophy, a list of 3-5 references including name, title and contact information, and evidence of teaching effectiveness (this could include some combination of teaching evaluations, peer reviews of teaching, and other materials reflecting the quality of teaching). Inclusive and evidenced-based pedagogy is expected at Butler University. Please indicate your previous experience with and commitment to inclusive and evidenced-based pedagogies in your cover letter.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide three letters of recommendation and unofficial transcripts. Final-round candidates will need to provide official transcripts and will be asked to consent to background checks.

Consideration of applications will begin on October 13, 2025, and continue until the position is filled. Questions may be sent to Laura Brandenburg, lbranden@butler.edu.
