Summary:

The AVP Controller is a management position responsible for overseeing the daily operational and compliance aspects of the Accounting Department. Perform all job responsibilities as noted below including the daily supervision of Accounting employee(s), in a manner that will ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and Credit Union policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: 

  • Provide oversight of daily accounting functions, including but not limited to, accounts payable, general ledger activity, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Prepares the monthly allowance for credit loss calculation in accordance with the approved methodology.
  • Oversees the preparation of financial and statistical reporting including inputs to the NCUA Call Report and other internal reporting.
  • Interfaces with outside auditors and NCUA examiners. Ensures the timely and accurate preparation of audit/exam documents as requested.
  • Prepares the operating budget for the Accounting Department and assists with the preparation of the credit union’s annual operating budget.
  • Leverages accounting information systems to produce analytical and forecasting reports to support model assumptions.
  • Prepares and provides accurate and timely financial reports for management and the Board of Directors.
  • Monitors monthly operating expenses and budget variances and ensures ongoing compliance with established budgetary guidelines.
  • Utilizes appropriate financial systems, tools, processes, and resources to support all the financial planning, management, and reporting needs of the credit union.
  • Consult with CFO on financial projections, budgeting, and variance reporting.
  • Establishes criteria for periodic review and evaluation of accounting processes and procedures.
  • Oversee and review the month-end closing process to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Meet established department goals with minimal supervision; update supervisor/leader on all major projects, employee issues and goal progress.
  • Ensure Accounting Department employment needs are met including timekeeping, annual performance evaluations, scheduling, training, motivation and coaching in an atmosphere of continuous improvement.
  • Perform job interview/hiring process for employee vacancies as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Provide strategic input and suggestions for future enhancements for system upgrades to achieve effective and efficient balance sheet management.

Performance Standards:

Must be able to communicate well with subordinates and other credit union employees and demonstrate leadership ability.  A professional attitude and appearance is vital to the success of this position.

Regulatory Requirements:

Your position has specific procedures that must be followed to comply with Privacy Act, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and Bank Secrecy/Patriot Act. You will receive annual training to keep you current on any changes to these policies/procedures to assure compliance.  Failure to comply with procedures may cause termination of your position as well as possible monetary penalties from the federal regulatory agency.

Education And/Or Experience:

A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited university required, plus a minimum of five years of progressive management experience in a financial institution or corporation.   Requires the ability to lead and supervise others.  Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with others is essential.
