Job Description
The Environmental Business Line at AECOM is actively seeking a dedicated Environmental Scientist to support a variety of environmental consulting projects. In addition to technical responsibilities, this role will also serve as a Deputy Project Manager, playing a vital part in supporting our Department of Defense (DoD) client’s mission by ensuring environmental compliance and managing the tracking and handling of hazardous materials and waste across multiple military installations worldwide.
Key responsibilities include analyzing and validating environmental data, preparing technical reports, and providing regulatory compliance support. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in hazardous materials and waste management, and a strong foundation in environmental regulations affecting DoD operations.
This position requires a high level of autonomy in project execution, including coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and direct communication with clients to deliver data-driven, regulatory-compliant solutions. The candidate will also provide cross-functional support on complex technical projects and contribute to project planning, quality assurance, and client deliverables.
This position is based in Arlington, VA, and/or Glen Allen, VA, with potential for travel depending on project needs.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide technical support for hazardous materials and hazardous waste programs, including inventory management, regulatory reporting, and compliance with RCRA and EPCRA requirements.
- Support coordination and execution of multi-site environmental compliance projects for Department of Defense clients.
- Lead or support environmental data collection efforts at client sites, review data for accuracy and completeness, perform calculations, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, compliance documentation, and memoranda to support environmental program requirements and project deliverables.
- Coordinate directly with military and civilian stakeholders to identify technical needs, provide program updates, and ensure project alignment with compliance goals and mission objectives.
- Support implementation and maintenance of environmental management software systems, including user support, data entry, troubleshooting, and training.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to support the successful execution of environmental projects and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
- Mentor junior staff by providing guidance on technical tasks, project procedures, and compliance best practices.
- Assist with the development and refinement of environmental policies and strategic plans, ensuring consistency with regulatory requirements and client objectives.
- Independently manage assigned tasks, communicate progress with project managers, and meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BA/BS +6 years of demonstrated equivalency of experience and or education
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
- Due to the nature of work, U.S. citizenship is required.
- Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong computer proficiency, with the ability to develop, update, and manage technical reports and project documentation
- Excellent time management, analytical thinking, and effective written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated experience providing administrative and operational support to technical environmental projects
- Proven ability to develop technical guidance and summarize regulatory requirements for project implementation
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Experience collaborating with clients to define technical needs and deliver tailored environmental solutions
- Background in developing and managing compliance programs for federal clients, including audits, reporting, data management, and recordkeeping across multiple environmental media
- Familiarity with federal agencies and operations, including DoD, DHS, and NPS
- Direct experience in hazardous materials and hazardous waste management, including regulatory compliance
- Prior involvement with environmental programs supporting federal agencies
- Strong work ethic, professional demeanor, and ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams
