Product Designer (Jansport)

What will you do?

A day in the life of a product designer at JanSport looks a little like this.

As a key member of the Design team, the Product Designer will assist in the creation and execution of innovative and trend right products that meet the needs of the company’s customers and end users across all product segments and global regions. You will interact regularly with various teams including Design, Development, Merchandising, Marketing, and Sales to share information that will lead to a well-designed product line.

Let’s break down that day-in-the-life a bit more.

  • Responsible for the ideation, creation, and presentation of new product designs. Including collections, styles, branding, trims, materials, features, function, and construction methods. 
  • Research consumer trends, and innovation concepts in the industry to maintain category leadership in the marketplace. 
  • Continuously leverage resources in producing new ideas. Has solid awareness of lifestyle, streetwear and sustainability trends and the ability to interpret these trends though the JanSport lens. 
  • Be the point person for a collection or segmentation and collaborate with the design manager, merchandisers, and developers to execute product / line direction. 
  • Completes technical design packages including various views, and mechanical drawings to achieve accurate communication of designs to manufacturing partners. 
  • Adhere to the product development calendar and hits all deadlines. 
  • Submit new materials and trim seasonally. 
  • Create and communicate visual presentations. 

What do you need to succeed?

We all have unique skills that we bring to work and celebrate every day. For this role, there are foundation skills you’ll need to succeed and excel. A bachelor’s degree in art and design, fashion, or related field along with 5 years of experience is required. Equivalent years of experience in a substantially similar industry may be considered in lieu of a degree to be determined by the nature of the specific job and the hiring manager’s criteria. 

The foundation skills you will need in this position are:

  • Ability to use good judgement, reasoning, and self-editing while designing/creating designs
  • Excellent communications skills, including the ability to present concepts to product teams and review boards in a persuasive manner. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment while switching gears frequently. 
  • Able to create and execute highly successful products with an entrepreneurial spirit. 
  • Skilled in 2D Sketching and product ideation 
  • Skilled in Illustrator 
  • Basic skills in Photoshop 
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of apparel/soft goods construction and manufacturing processes. 
  • Basic knowledge of product costs and impact of design 
  • Good organizational skills. Computer literate in MS Office 
  • Embraces change and react with speed and agility. 
  • Ability to be a team player 
  • Personable, professional, and high accountability

Hiring Range:

$82,080.00 USD - $102,600.00 USD annually

Incentive Potential: This position is eligible for additional compensation awards that may include an annual incentive plan, sales incentive, or commission potential. Specific details of the additional compensation eligibility for this position will be provided during the recruiting and interview process.
