About This Job

Position Specific Summary

The Electronics Technician Supervisor position at the City of Tucson's General Services Department supervises work related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's fiber optic and copper networks, public safety communications systems, and related equipment. This position ensures that tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with City standards.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Facilities Management Superintendent. This position exercises supervision over Communication Maintenance personnel.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Determines workload priorities, assigns work, and coordinates staff to ensure timely, high-quality work in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Monitors progress, reviews labor reports, and reassigns workloads as needed. Assists with implementing and interpreting department policies and procedures. Participates in hiring processes, evaluates performance, recommends disciplinary actions, and ensures staff receive appropriate training and guidance. Assists with approving leave requests, timecard verification, and timekeeping accuracy.
  • Coordinates and reviews Arizona 811 blue stake requests for the City's fiber optic and copper networks. Supervises field marking of buried lines and ensures updates to the city's digital utility maps are accurate and completed in a timely matter.
  • Reviews and inspects contractor installations of fiber optic components, ensuring compliance with City standards, Arizona 811 requirements, and safety regulations. Develops project cost estimates and implements budget control for facilities related projects.
  • Ensures the completion of preventative maintenance, installation, and repair of portable and mobile radios, lntraplex system components, fire alerting systems, dispatch consoles, and emergency power systems.
  • Supervises and assists with diagnosing and troubleshooting electronic systems in City vehicles, including lights, sirens, radios, and internal communication systems, while ensuring proper up-fitting and down-fitting processes.
  • Builds strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to address department related issues and support effective communication. Responds to emergencies, ensures labor charges are entered into enterprise systems, attends meetings, and contributes to operational improvement.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions


Work schedule may include early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Work requires on-call shifts. 

Often works under the following conditions: exposure to physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environment, which includes but not limited to dirt, grime, chemical, loud noise, and unfavorable odors.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate degree
Experience: Two (2) years of directly related experience
Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
License/Certifications: Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience performing Fiber Optic and Copper Network installation, testing, troubleshooting and repair.

Certifications in fiber optic testing or installation.
