POSITION SUMMARY
Collaborates with the Transportation Routing Specialist to plan school bus routes for safety and efficiency for all eligible students across the county. Inputs data into transportation routing software- TripSpark’s VEO Transportation- to maintain a tiered school bus transportation system catering to approximately 24,000 students.
- EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- • High School Diploma or Equivalent
- • Associate degree preferred
- • Working knowledge and general understanding of the geography and roads within Charles County preferred
QUALIFICATIONS
• Outstanding communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to work independently
• Ability to utilize computer-assisted routing software and have a functional knowledge of common software products used in an office setting (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases)
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Implementation and ongoing operation of routing software (TripSpark VEO Transportation), which results in safe and efficient routing, including the following:
• Assists in all phases of the operation of a safe and efficient school transportation system, including the routing of regular and special education route vehicles.
• Coordinates with Transportation Routing Specialist to determine and establish changes to bus stop locations, routes, and school vehicle loading zones.
• Assists the Transportation Routing Specialist in the auditing of school vehicle routes, maximizing school vehicle capacity, and creating and assigning school bus stop locations. Route audits are done in collaboration with the Transportation Routing Specialist, contractors, drivers, and school personnel.
• Assigns students to appropriate school bus stops by establishing accurate ranges within the routing software.
• Assists in accurate maintenance of documents, information, daycare address updates, and other records pertaining to student transportation.
• Maintains confidentiality with regard to student addresses, bus assignments, special needs accommodations, displaced students, and other departmental matters.
• Utilizes the school locator portal to publicize school eligibility and bus assignments to schools, contractors, and the community.
• Prepares and distributes routes established with the Transportation Routing Specialist through the transportation database (school locator/bus lookup portal) for staff, schools, contractors, and the community.
• Edits routing software map to reflect changes in county infrastructure (new developments, roads, address points, etc.).
• Coordinates with county officials to confirm road names and development status.
• Maintains a route update library each school year, recording changes that have been made throughout the school year to ensure accurate communication to contractors, staff, and the community.
• Runs routing reports (Eligible Unassigned, Assigned Unrouted, Not Geocoded) for the Transportation Routing Specialist regularly.
• Responds to inquiries and concerns regarding the application of policies, procedures, and routing in a timely manner.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel is required to fulfill the duties of this position.
• Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director of Transportation or designee.
Environmental Factors & Physical Requirements
The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
