ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following outlines the professional responsibilities for an Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiovascular specialist within the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). These duties align with UTMB’s mission of excellence in patient care, education, research, and community engagement.

  • Provide both inpatient and outpatient care for patients with advanced heart failure, cardiomyopathies, mechanical circulatory support devices, and those undergoing heart transplantation.
  • Staff and supervise the inpatient Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Service, including ICU and step-down units, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based care.
  • Conduct outpatient HF clinics for new consultations, return visits, transplant evaluations, and longitudinal follow-up.
  • Interpret and act upon advanced cardiovascular diagnostics (e.g., echocardiography, right heart catheterization, hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac MRI, biomarker interpretation).
  • Manage complex pharmacologic regimens, including initiation and titration of guideline-directed medical therapy.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including cardiac surgery, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, palliative care, and rehabilitation services.
  • Provide timely patient access, including same-day access when clinically indicated, and respond to referring provider inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Participate in didactic teaching sessions, case conferences, and journal clubs.
  • Contribute to curriculum development for cardiovascular education.
  • Supervise trainee documentation and ensure adherence to institutional standards.
  • Participate in clinical research projects, including patient recruitment for research trials.
  • Publish scholarly articles, abstracts, or presentations in the field of cardiology.
  • Support quality improvement projects focused on ambulatory cardiology care.
  • Document patient encounters promptly and accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Attend departmental and institute meetings.
  • Collaborate with clinic management to optimize patient flow and access.
  • Participate in institutional committees as assigned.
  • Contribute to development of clinical protocols, pathways, and best practices.
  • Monitor clinical outcomes and participate in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal healthcare regulations.
  • Maintain appropriate credentialing, licensure, and continuing medical education (CME) requirements.
  • Participate in peer review and morbidity/mortality conferences.
  • Participate in national and regional cardiology conferences.
  • Engage in outreach to referring providers and community organizations.
  • Represent the institution in professional societies and advocacy efforts.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MD degree or equivalent, Board certified or eligible in ABIM Cardiovascular Diseases with Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology certification (or eligibility). Must possess or be eligible for full medical license in the State of Texas.


SALARY:
Commensurate with experience.
