Role Overview

We are seeking a Project Manager to join our Engineering team and lead the end-to-end execution of complex hardware development projects. Unlike traditional software-focused roles, this position emphasizes cross-functional coordination in the design, development, prototyping, and manufacturing of physical products.

The Project Manager (PM) will serve as the central point of accountability, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with both engineering and business objectives. This individual will work closely with mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to drive execution, maintain structured processes, and ensure effective communication across all stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Planning & Roadmapping

  • Define project scope, objectives, deliverables, and success metrics in alignment with business and engineering leadership.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project roadmaps, schedules, and resource allocation plans.
  • Break down complex hardware programs into actionable milestones, ensuring feasibility and clarity across functions.

Execution & Coordination

  • Drive day-to-day project execution, ensuring progress is tracked and dependencies are actively managed.
  • Coordinate design reviews, prototype builds, testing cycles, and iteration planning.
  • Facilitate collaboration across mechanical, electrical, software, and operations/manufacturing teams.
  • Ensure timely escalation and resolution of blockers and risks.
  • Act as the central communication hub between engineering, leadership, and other stakeholders.
  • Deliver clear, regular project updates on progress, risks, dependencies, and mitigation strategies.
  • Document key decisions, design changes, and lessons learned to improve future projects.
  • Risk & Quality Management

Communication & Reporting

  • Identify and assess project risks early, developing and driving mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with product quality standards, reliability goals, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage scope changes and prevent scope creep through structured change control processes.

Resource & Process Management

  • Collaborate with leadership to allocate resources effectively across competing priorities.
  • Implement and refine project management frameworks (Agile, Stage-Gate, or hybrid) tailored to hardware development.
  • Champion continuous improvement in workflows, project tracking, and cross-team alignment.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Project Management, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 5+ years of project management experience, ideally within hardware product development (consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, robotics, or similar).
  • Proven track record managing cross-functional engineering projects from concept through production.

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Strong understanding of hardware development lifecycles, including prototyping, testing, validation, and manufacturing transfer.
  • Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and embedded software engineering processes.
  • Proficiency with project management tools (e.g., Jira, Asana, Smartsheet, MS Project) and documentation systems.
  • Solid grasp of Agile, Stage-Gate, or hybrid project management frameworks.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to balance technical detail with executive-level reporting.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to drive accountability across diverse teams.

Preferred

  • PMP, PRINCE2, or Agile certification.
  • Experience with regulated industries (e.g., automotive, aerospace, medical devices).
  • Background in supplier and vendor management for hardware production.

Independent Contractor Perks
  • With HMO Coverage for eligible locations
  • Permanent work from home
  • Immediate hiring
  • Steady freelance job
