Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is seeking a skilled and compassionate Rheumatologist to provide high-quality patient care in both internal medicine and rheumatology. In this role, you’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop comprehensive treatment plans and serve as the attending physician overseeing inpatient medical unit care.

Please Note Scheduled Hours:  Part-time position offering 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, scheduling between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Deliver internal medicine and rheumatology care across inpatient consults, outpatient clinics, telephone coverage, and telehealth services for DPH institutions
  • Supervise inpatient medical teams and provide subacute inpatient care
  • Evaluate staff performance and offer policy guidance
  • Serve as in-patient attending on the Acute Medicine teaching service for two weeks annually, including teaching responsibilities
  • Provide weekend and holiday coverage (2 weekends and 2 holidays per year) as rounding attending physician
  • Perform bedside and clinic procedures as needed
  • Adhere to hospital policies, medical staff bylaws, and ethical standards of practice
  • Participate in designated departmental committees
  • Advise the Chief Medical Officer and leadership on patient care improvements and program initiatives
  • Ensure timely, accurate documentation with appropriate coding and billing
  • Contribute to utilization review for inpatient and specialty services
  • Deliver six one-hour educational presentations annually to residents and/or hospital staff

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficient in pediatric diagnostics and treatment, including general pediatrics and relevant subspecialties
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, growth and development, pharmacology, and drug administration
  • Skilled in medical instruments, procedures, safety protocols, and sterilization techniques
  • Familiar with medical terminology, documentation standards, and report preparation
  • Experienced in managing acute and chronic conditions in children and adolescents, including those with physical and cognitive disabilities
  • Able to interpret medical records, x-rays, medication orders, and patient profiles
  • Effective in-patient communication, including motivational interviewing across diverse populations
  • Capable of performing bedside and clinic procedures and adapting to emergency situations
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting medical data and research to inform patient care
  • Exercises sound clinical judgment and maintain confidentiality
  • Experienced in team leadership, supervision, training, and performance evaluation
  • Communicates clearly in both oral and written formats
  • Builds rapport with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Knowledgeable of medical laws, regulations, and ethical standards
  • Comfortable working in multicultural environments and adhering to institutional policies

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to teach medical theory and clinical practice
  • Skilled in supervising residents, nurses, and allied health professionals
  • Comprehensive knowledge of general internal medicine, including diagnosis, management, and relevant procedures as defined by clinical privileges

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

 First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a registered physician. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Current and valid registration as a physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range
