The Department of Clinical Research at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is inviting applications for a PhD position in the field of audiology. The position is available for three years from March 1st, 2026.

Project Description

The advertised PhD position forms part of a competence network supported by the EU Interreg-6a funding scheme between Germany and Denmark. The vision is to develop an innovative digital platform to support persons with hearing problems – from initial self-help to professional care. Termed ‘Online Service Centre for heAring caRe’ (OSCAR), the platform will provide neutral information services, online hearing tests, aftercare tools, and follow-up recommendations in an integrated, user-friendly manner.

OSCAR includes the following project partners: SDU (Profs. Tobias Neher & Michal Fereczkowski), the German Institute of Hearing Aids GmbH (PD Dr. Hendrik Husstedt & Dr. Florian Denk), Odense University Hospital (Clinical Prof. Jesper Hvass Schmidt), and hear-concept GmbH & Co. KG (Maurice Horn). The PhD student at SDU will mainly contribute to work package 4 (‘Hearing screening and needs assessment’). Tasks will include the development and evaluation of digital tools for screening and profiling persons with untreated hearing problems with a focus on speech perception in noise, suprathreshold psychoacoustics, and self-perceived hearing abilities.

Research Environment

At SDU, the PhD student will be affiliated with the Research Unit of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, which is divided into three sections: Surgically-related ENT, Medical Audiology, and Technical Audiology. The advertised PhD position is available in the Technical Audiology section.

Qualifications

The position is suited for a person with an interest in both technical and clinical audiological work. Ideally, applicants for the position should possess the following qualifications:

  • Master degree in audiology, speech and hearing sciences, acoustics, or a related field
  • Very good command of audiological test methods and hearing aid treatment
  • Good command of psychoacoustics
  • Good command of the English language in spoken and written form
  • Knowledge of statistics and/or data science
  • Knowledge of Matlab, Python, or a similar programming language
  • Some research experience (e.g., in the form of a conference contribution, a publication, or a research assistant position)
  • Knowledge of the Danish and/or German language is a plus
