Are you a senior level mechanic with an HVAC Mechanic Journeyman's license? The Facilities Maintenance Bureau within the Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking an HVAC Mechanic II to repair and maintain heating system equipment, air conditioning systems and ventilating systems for multiple sites throughout the County. This position will monitor and diagnose the operation of systems and equipment through the use of Direct Digital Control (DDC) Building Automated System (BAS) and will assist in developing routine corrective and preventive maintenance duties to be performed by staff and contractors. Supervision is received from the Maintenance Supervisor.
Specific Duties Include:
- Monitoring other technician's work in progress and providing them with technical guidance and direction to multiple types of HVAC equipment;
- Diagnosing equipment problems and repairing and maintaining commercial air handling units, chillers, cabinet unit heaters, VAV, VRF, heat recovery units, low- and high-pressure boilers, hot water boilers, and similar equipment;
- Inspecting, repairing, ordering, modifying and/or replacing HVAC equipment including air conditioning compressors, heat exchangers, split systems, pneumatic controls, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves, and Roof Top Units, etc;
- Testing and replacing digital control panels, thermostats, sensors, transmitters, controllers, relays, automatic valves and dampers;
- Using computer-controlled BAS systems to evaluate, diagnose problems, and make adjustments to temperatures and humidity in buildings throughout the County to ensure that the equipment is operating and proper comfort levels are maintained at all times;
- Informing internal and external customers of HVAC issues and repairs schedules; and
- Performing other job-related duties as directed.
Minimum:
- High school or GED plus a 2-year technical degree in air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling and ventilating or Associate degree in HVAC;
- Three (3) years' experience repairing and maintaining HVAC equipment in commercial buildings which included one (1) year working on related computerized and digital controlled systems, operating automated building systems by Siemens and Trane, or similar systems; and
- Possession of Universal CFC Recovery License and HVAC Mechanic Journeyman's license from Virginia, Maryland or the District of Columbia is required.
Substitution: Additional years of HVAC equipment mechanic experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
- BAS installation and programming experience;
- HVAC Lead or Supervisor experience;
- HVAC Project experience; and
- Repair and maintenance experience of large commercial HVAC equipment at multiple sites including servicing and operating boilers, Centrifugal chillers, Screw Chillers, Roof Top Units, VRF Systems, Gas Heating units, other HVAC equipment, VAV systems, Heat Pumps and Geothermal systems.

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. Driver's License: Applicant must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license and must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record. The employee will operate a County vehicle to perform assigned duties away from primary worksite.
Physical Requirements:
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment: The work environment includes exposure to noise, odors, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.
Additional Information
Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The shift may change depending on departmental needs. The employee must be available for call-back and be willing to work after normal duty hours in emergency situations, provide coverage for Watch Engineers in the Justice Center during staff shortages and work the afternoon shift for one week every 10 weeks.
