Senior Manager, Systems Engineer

Location: This in-office position will be based out of our Calgary, Toronto, or Winnipeg office.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Vice-President, Systems Solutions, the Senior Manager, Systems Engineer is responsible for leading the implementation of modern software engineering practices of enterprise applications and platforms. The incumbent will lead cross-functional teams focused on system enhancements, defect resolution, operational readiness, and long-term sustainability of business-critical software. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with proven leadership in production environments.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing software development teams in the design and implementation of new systems and enhancements to existing applications.
  • Overseeing code quality, technical architecture, performance optimization, and alignment with enterprise standards.
  • Ensuring development activities support scalability, maintainability, and reusability.
  • Establishing and managing processes for corrective and preventing maintenance of applications.
  • Ensuring timely resolution of bugs and technical debt.
  • Maintaining up-to-date documentation and version control of all maintained systems.
  • Leading the application support function, including Level 2 and 3 incident response and root cause analysis.
  • Coordinating with DevOps, infrastructure, and security teams to monitor application health and performance.
  • Defining and enforcing SLAs, SLOs, uptime targets, and response procedures for production environments.
  • Leading cross-functional teams including  systems developers, support analysts, and release managers.
  • Implementing Agile or ITIL-based processes to manage development, release, and support workflows.
  • Champion DevOps principles, including continuous integration, continuous delivery (CI/CD), and infrastructure as code (IaC).
  • Overseeing configuration of automation pipelines for code build, test, release, and deployment processes.
  • Collaborating with cloud and infrastructure teams to ensure scalable and resilient environments.
  • Identifying areas for operational improvement and process automation.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to prioritize system enhancements based on user feedback and support trends.
  • Introducing tools for proactive monitoring, logging, and alerting.
  • Working closely with business users, project managers, and product owners to understand support needs and plan system roadmaps.
  • Communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:

  • A bachelors degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field.
  • A minimum of 8–10 years of experience in software development, with at least 5 years in a management or technical leadership role.
  • Proven experience managing large-scale systems in production environments.
  • Strong hands-on understanding of software development (e.g., Java, .NET, Python REST APIs) and relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, Redshift, Oracle, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience with incident management tools (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira Service Management) and monitoring tools (e.g., Dynatrace, New Relic, Splunk).
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, source control (e.g., Git), and automated testing.
  • Strong experience with infrastructure (e.g., cloud environments like AWS/Azure) and container platforms (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Demonstrates a high level of accountability, adaptability, and innovation in achieving both day-to-day responsibilities and long-term goals.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent attitude and commitment to providing exceptional service.
  • Exemplary interpersonal, influencing, and communication skills across multiple mediums (in-person, phone, virtual).
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Highly organized with a consistent and reliable work ethic.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to manage a high volume of competing priorities.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and people management skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced, production-critical environment

Conditions Of Employment:

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Must be able to  travel within Canada up to 0-5% of the time as is operationally required.
