Description

We are seeking a highly experienced Underwriting Manager to lead and oversee our underwriting team. The ideal candidate will bring 10+ years of mortgage underwriting experience across conforming, FHA, VA, jumbo, and non-QM loan products. This individual must have a proven track record in managing underwriters, ensuring credit quality, operational efficiency, and compliance with investor, agency, and regulatory requirements. Experience with warehouse line management is essential.

200k+ salary. The exact amount depends on applicant's qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of underwriters, fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Provide ongoing training and performance management to ensure high-quality credit decisions.
  • Establish and monitor team productivity, turn times, and service level agreements.
  • Underwriting Oversight
  • Review and approve loan files for credit, collateral, and compliance with conforming, FHA, VA, jumbo, and non-QM guidelines.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex underwriting scenarios.
  • Ensure adherence to investor guidelines, agency rules (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA), and company credit policies.
  • Warehouse Line & Risk Management
  • Oversee warehouse line utilization, collateral management, and funding requirements.
  • Monitor credit risk exposure and collaborate with secondary marketing and finance teams on pipeline management.
  • Implement risk controls and provide feedback to improve overall loan quality.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with operations, sales, compliance, and secondary marketing to support company growth while maintaining credit integrity.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions effectively to internal teams, loan officers, and executives.
  • Contribute to policy development and continuous process improvement initiatives.

Skills, Knowledge And Expertise

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive mortgage underwriting experience across multiple loan products (conforming, FHA, VA, jumbo, non-QM).
  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership or management role, overseeing underwriting teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with warehouse line oversight and loan funding operations.
  • Expert knowledge of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, and non-QM guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of credit risk, collateral analysis, and income/asset review.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey complex underwriting decisions clearly and professionally.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in mortgage LOS platforms (e.g., Encompass, Calyx, etc.) and AUS systems (DU, LP).
  • DE/CHUMS, LAPP/SAR certifications strongly preferred.
  • Experience in both retail and wholesale lending environments.
  • Proven success in scaling underwriting operations in high-growth mortgage companies.
