We are seeking a Principal Data Scientist with deep expertise in machine learning, predictive analytics, and modern data platforms to lead our data science initiatives and drive intelligent decision-making across our organization.
Position Overview As a Principal Data Scientist, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing predictive modeling solutions that power our insurance platform while leading strategic data science initiatives. You will collaborate closely with business stakeholders to identify opportunities where data and technology can drive impact and innovation, combining hands-on modeling expertise with technical leadership to build data-driven platforms that optimize risk assessment, pricing, and customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Predictive Model Development: Design and deploy predictive models for sales/services automation and comprehensive risk assessments using Python, R, and modern ML frameworks.
- Analytics Strategy & Implementation: Define and oversee data science best practices, ensuring robust model development and deployment across all business functions.
- Performance Optimization: Ensure high accuracy, efficiency, and interpretability for all models and analytics solutions.
- Underwriting Leadership: Share underwriting responsibilities with insurance product teams and underwriting specialists, applying data science expertise to risk evaluation processes.
- Book Management Support: Provide analytical support for overall book management, ensuring portfolio optimization and performance monitoring.
- Technical Leadership: Lead the development and architecture of machine learning models and analytics pipelines to ensure scalability, accuracy, and reliability.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with actuaries, underwriters, product managers, and stakeholders to translate complex modeling concepts into tangible business outcomes.
Qualifications
- Data Science Expertise: Proven experience in designing, training, and deploying models in a production environment with proficiency in Python, R, and SQL.
- Strong statistical and mathematical background, with deep understanding of machine learning algorithms, experimental design, and statistical inference.
- Business Acumen: Ability to translate complex modeling concepts into tangible business outcomes and drive strategic decision-making.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical, creative, and critical-thinking skills for tackling complex data challenges in the insurance domain.
- Experience with modern data platforms like Spark, Databricks, Snowflake, and MLOps tools for model deployment and monitoring.
- Insurance Domain Knowledge: Understanding of actuarial concepts, risk modeling, and regulatory requirements in insurance is highly preferred. Prior experience in insurance, fintech, or related industries is a plus.
Preferred Location Candidates based in Madison, Wisconsin, are preferred to facilitate close collaboration with our team.
