About Our Team
The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.
Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.
Position Summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Grade 1 Biochemistry Scientist to join our team and contribute to the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services within the Shared Pathology Service. In this role, you will perform a broad range of routine biochemistry tests under appropriate supervision, ensuring accuracy, reliability and adherence to laboratory quality control processes while maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
You will be an active member of a collaborative, multi-skilled team, participating in staff rotations, on-call duties, overtime and out-of-hours rosters as required. Ongoing professional development is encouraged, including involvement in self-education, internal and external training opportunities and participation in clinical and scientific meetings.
This position provides an excellent opportunity to develop your technical skills, contribute to a 24-hour diagnostic service and support high standards of scientific practice across the Shared Pathology Service.
About You
Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent is required.
- Recognised tertiary scientific training in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Haematology, Pathology or other relevant sciences.
- A major in Biochemistry is desirable.
Experience And Skills Required:
- Professional approach to patient care, patient and pathology service’s confidentiality, provision of pathology services, self-education and the teaching of others.
- Be able to perform all pathology tests provided by the Unit without supervision (following a suitable period of training). This includes relevant use of telephone, laboratory quality control and computing procedures and acknowledgment of patient care and confidentiality responsibilities.
- Ability to organise own work and to relate well to fellow staff, other hospital staff and patients.
- To be able to perform all routine pathology tests and participate in the 24 hour service provided by the Unit
- Previous experience in a diagnostic biochemistry laboratory is desirable.
