About Our Team

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.  

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a pathology services at Western Health (WH), which includes, collection centres, branch laboratories at New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital and point-of-care services.  We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services.  

Position Summary

The Scientist in this position will provide diagnostic services in the Human Molecular Pathology unit with a particular focus on the areas of molecular haematology and oncology, and genetic disorders. The scope of the role includes performance and analysis of all pathology tests provided by the unit, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, staff training and quality assurance. 

About You

Qualifications Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent is required (preferably in Molecular Biology). 

Experience And Skills Required:

• Experience in human molecular biology techniques.
• Ability to function independently without supervision and in a team environment.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Good communication skills. 

Desirable Experience And Skills:

• Prior experience in a NATA accredited laboratory 
• Knowledge of the genetics of blood and/or solid tumour cancers 
• Experience in NGS library preparation and Sequencing 
• Experience with digital PCR and measurable residual disease testing 
• Basic bioinformatics skills, including experience with visualisation tools such as IGV 
• Experience in variant curation according to ACMG/AMP guidelines
