About Our Team

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) is key to providing integrated and timely diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria.  

Alfred Health supports the local community while addressing complex state-wide needs, including trauma, organ transplantation and HIV/AIDS diagnostics. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals, offering a comprehensive range of services through five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology.

Position Summary

The Haematology department at the Alfred encompasses Coagulation, Haematology & Morphology, Blood Transfusion, Flow cytometry, Immunology & Allergy support for all units of Alfred health.  

Grade 1 and 2 Scientists are allocated to, or rotate through, various sections of the laboratory and may need to rotate into the Sandringham laboratory if required. They are responsible for the processing of routine specimens according to established laboratory procedures and issuing of results relevant to these specimens. Their goal is to work as part of a team to achieve high quality work and produce accurate and timely reports. 

About You

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent is required. 
  • Higher qualifications such as M.Sc., or graduate membership or fellowship of any relevant professional body e.g. AIMS is highly desirable.  

Experience And Skills Required:

  • Competence in Flow Cytometry processing, analysis and interpretation.
  • Sound knowledge of laboratory haematology, interpretation and its practical applications.
  • Sound knowledge of clinical haematology and its practical applications.
  • Competence in blood film examination and interpretation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the relevant disciplines. 
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills.
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Computer proficiency and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. 

Desirable Experience And Skills:

  • Competence using Kaluza and Infinicyt analysis software.
  • Competence in blood film examination and interpretation.
