Our core services comprise civil works, trenching, cable installation, electrical and mechanical installations, terminations, testing, commissioning (DC, LV, HV), operations support and maintenance expertise. Our goal is to generate sustainable returns by delivering projects for our clients safely, efficiently, and reliably while providing rewarding and meaningful careers for our people. Headquartered in Brisbane, we are a dynamic business with projects across Australia and New Zealand.
Position Overview
AEC is seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to join our growing team. In this key role, you will be responsible for preparing and delivering high quality, competitive estimates and tender submissions for multi-discipline renewable energy projects. While the focus is civil engineering and civil estimating, we need someone who is comfortable delving into electrical/power infrastructure scope to ensure comprehensive costing. You’ll work closely with engineering, procurement, project delivery & commercial teams, and contribute to continuous improvement of estimating systems, tools & processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed estimates and budgets for civil works (earthworks, foundations, access roads, drainage, structural civil) for solar farms, wind farms, BESS, HV/LV substation / switchyard / transmission works.
- Costing of associated power infrastructure: cable trenches, padmount transformers, junction boxes, terminations, etc. Collaborate with electrical estimation teams to integrate multi discipline scope.
- Analysing tender documents: drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, soil surveys, site constraints, environmental / regulatory requirements.
- Perform risk assessments and include contingencies, allowances & escalation as required.
- Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors, internal technical teams to obtain quotations, validate assumptions, and benchmark rates.
- Prepare bill of quantities / quantities take offs; review & check estimating inputs for completeness and accuracy.
- Contribute to tender strategy: pricing strategy, value engineering, alternative solutions to optimise cost vs performance.
- Mentor / supervise junior estimators; assist in building estimating capability within the team.
- Maintain and update estimating databases, unit rates, cost libraries, tools.
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum of 5 - 8 years of estimating experience in civil engineering works, ideally in renewable energy / power infrastructure / heavy civils.
- Exposure to electrical and power scope (HV/LV, transmission / distribution / substation work) or willing to learn / work across disciplines.
- Experience preparing estimates for large projects — examples in the range of AU$5M to AU$150M+ would be ideal.
- Strong knowledge of civil design documentation, geotechnical data, structural & earthworks specifications.
- Ability to read & interpret civil, structural & electrical drawings and specifications.
- Solid financial understanding: cost drivers, margin management, risk, escalation, labour, materials, plant & equipment.
- Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills, able to meet deadlines in high pressure bidding cycles.
- Strong communication skills—able to interact with internal teams (engineering, procurement, delivery), subcontractors, clients.
- Proficiency in estimation software / spreadsheets, perhaps also cost databases & take off tools.
- Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or similar is a plus.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary + super + bonus / incentive potential.
- Opportunity to work on high-profile renewable energy and power projects, contributing meaningfully to Australia’s energy transition.
- A multi-disciplinary role: great variety in work, broad exposure (civil + electrical + power).
- Collaborative, supportive culture with opportunities for growth and mentoring.
- Flexible working options & travel to sites as required.
- Professional development & continuous improvement of skills.
How To Apply
Please submit your resume with a cover letter outlining:
- Your experience estimating civil works in renewable energy or power infrastructure contexts;
- Examples of projects you’ve estimated (size / value / discipline) and your role;
- Your exposure or willingness to work on electrical / power scope as part of your estimates;
- Why you’re interested in this role and what you bring to our team.
