GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the immediate or general supervision of a Lead Supervisor or higher; to perform, either alone or within a team, troubleshooting, testing, repair, replacement, calibrating, repositioning, relocating, programming and activation of water meters, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) meter transmission units (MTU), valves, boxes, vaults, lids, and other related pipes and appurtenances.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position does not exercise supervision.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Meter Worker I
Perform preventative maintenance on 5/8” to 2” water metering devices and associated infrastructure to ensure their accuracy and reliability.
Investigate customer complaints related to the accuracy and integrity of 5/8” to 2” water metering devices and their associated infrastructure.
Perform water service turn off and/or turn on for individual accounts at the meter.
Investigate and take appropriate action at the meter location to prevent illegal water usage.
Record locations and details of all work performed.
Communicate effectively with other employees, customers and supervisors the nature and status of work being performed.
Operate a City vehicle daily to travel to various worksites .
Ensure the work site is safe and productive at all times.
Meter Worker II
Perform bench and/or field accuracy testing of 5/8” to 10” water meters.
OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES
Assist with accomplishing other, non-meter tasks, as directed.
Collect and provide manual meter reads, as needed, to support billing operations.
Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Basic principles of positive displacement, ultrasonic and electromagnetic water flow meters.
Basic plumbing tools, practices and procedures.
Safe driving principles and practices.
Skill to:
Safely operate and care for all tools, vehicles, equipment and materials.
Safeguard and effectively use assigned information technology equipment in the field.
Operate a motor vehicle safely.
Ability to:
Pay attention-to-detail when performing general maintenance work.
Accomplish required tasks at their minimum acceptable rate for this position.
Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in written reports.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:
For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Meter Worker I
Experience:
Six (6) months of experience as a Laborer, Utility Worker, or other related work is required.
Previous experience in performing minor plumbing work is preferred.
Education/Training:
A high school diploma or GED is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
Possession of or the ability to obtain a TCEQ D Water License within one (1) year of employment is required.
Meter Worker II
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience comparable to the duties of a Meter Worker I with the City of Abilene is required.
Education/Training:
A high school diploma or GED is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
A valid TCEQ Class C Water Distribution License is required.
A valid Texas Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is preferred.
Special Requirements:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Bloodborne Pathogens training and HazCom training are required within Sixty (60) days of employment.
Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
Ability to travel to different sites.
Availability to work an 8-hour shift during normal business hours, and be on standby (on call) to work outside normal business hours, as needed.
