Overview:
The Salem State University Mathematics Department is seeking to hire a full-time, tenure-track faculty member to serve as the department Foundational Mathematics Coordinator. Working with various stakeholders around the university, the Foundational Mathematics Coordinator oversees assessment, placement, and support programing for students taking early-career mathematics courses at Salem State University. Successful candidates will hold a PhD in mathematics or mathematics education with a demonstrated interest or expertise in research in undergraduate mathematics education. This position is open rank.
For the past several years, the SSU Mathematics Department has been actively engaged in improving the assessment, placement, and support for students taking mathematics courses. This includes piloting both a new departmental assessment policy, as well as working with the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE), the Registrar’s Office, and the Center for Accessible Academic Resources (CAAR) on how to best assess incoming students taking math and provide them the necessary support for success in credit-bearing math courses. In Fall 2026, the department anticipates the implementation of a new university-wide assessment and placement policy for all incoming students, as well as a 1-credit Math Support Lab course for students determined to need foundational mathematics support.

Duties And Responsibilities
Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the Massachusetts State College Association (MSCA) faculty contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to the continuous improvement of the department and university.
Specifically, the responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Teaching in the Mathematics Department.
- Leading the Math Department assessment, placement, and support program for students entering a typical STEM-major mathematics pathway, including regularly assessing the effectiveness of the program.
- Working with stakeholders across campus (CAE, CAAR, other STEM Departments) to implement and assess the effectiveness of university-wide assessment, placement, and support of incoming first year and transfer students taking early career mathematics courses.
- Taking a lead role in assessing and maintaining curriculum in early career mathematics courses at Salem State.
- Assisting in the coordination of multi-section 100-level mathematics courses.
- Working with the Mathematics Learning Center Coordinator to implement the department assessment and support program (e.g. 1-credit Math Support Lab, administering of placement assessments).
- Advise Mathematics Majors.
- Engage in departmental and university service.
- Engage in research or other scholarly activity.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or related field.
- Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in undergraduate teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the implementation and assessment of placement and support programs for students taking mathematics courses.
- Demonstrated interest and experience in researching undergraduate mathematics teaching and learning.
- Experience in and commitment to working with a heterogeneous student body.
