Description

Gordon College invites applications for a fulltime, tenuretrack Assistant or Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Science, Technology, and Health. The position begins August 2026. Rank will be commensurate with experience. 

Located on Boston’s North Shore, a beautiful coastal area in a classic New England town with easy access to the Boston area, Gordon College is dedicated to a strong Christian liberal arts perspective. We strive to foster conversation at the intersection of faith and cultural engagement in a wide variety of disciplines, all with the mission to prepare Christian men and women to actively participate in every community in which they find themselves. We seek someone with a strong background in Engineering and Physics who is a committed Christian and is passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from diverse cultural backgrounds in a Christian liberal arts setting. 

The Physics and Engineering Programs, including a concentration in Materials Science and new majors in General and Mechanical Engineering, are focused on providing high-quality instruction and unique undergraduate research opportunities. Our small classes, tradition of student research, and active community allow faculty to develop strong relationships with students. Our labs and machine shop are well equipped to support our Engineering students and faculty research. Graduates of the programs pursue graduate degrees, work at high tech startup companies or STEM-industry companies, teach at the secondary education level, or start companies on their own. 

A candidate for this position should have a Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics by the time of appointment and be committed to high-quality teaching at all levels. Additionally, we seek an individual who desires to further our program’s tradition of strong mentoring relationships for its students and demonstrates the potential for a sustained research program involving student participation. A demonstrated interest in sharing the outworkings of a committed Christian faith in vocation is essential.

Qualifications

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Demonstrate a dynamic Christian faith;
  • Have a doctorate in Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field;
  • Possess an ability to instruct courses including Introduction to Engineering, Engineering Design, Mechanics, Dynamics, a Capstone Research course, and Engineering Lab Techniques course;
  • Exhibit a passion for teaching and mentoring undergraduates;
  • Exhibit research momentum that can include undergraduates;
  • Possess an interest in further developing the current 3-2 Engineering Program and new General Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Programs, advising students in the program, and assisting with their placement in engineering schools and jobs; and
  • Have collaborative skills that cross departmental and disciplinary boundaries, including a willingness to instruct non‐physics majors.
