ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steel producer. We use the most innovative technologies to create the steels tomorrow’s world will be made of. Every day over 125,000 of our talented people, located in over 60 countries, push the boundaries of digitalization, and use advanced technologies to create a stronger, faster, and smarter world. To help make this possible, they know they can depend on the support and training that a company of our scope and scale can provide.
Comprising 1,650 researchers spread across 14 Research Centres around the world, our Global R&D team aims to continuously improve the quality of steel and its manufacturing processes. This involves investigating and developing disruptive technologies, reducing the carbon footprint of steel, and optimizing costs while maintaining uncompromising quality. The team's strong multicultural diversity, with over 30 nationalities, offers international experience and makes it possible to meet global needs.
Maizières Products centre aims at developing products (new steel grades and coatings) and associated processes (formability, in-use properties including sustainability and durability) to promote a competitive offer for ArcelorMittal in the automotive and packaging market worldwide. Packaging R&D projects portfolio (in which you will be involved in) is divided into a large range of R&D programs covering the development of new products (steel & coatings) and new generic steel solutions, product and technologies developments in breakthrough and finally, customer and plant support. R&D Packaging team is made up of over 30 members involved in nearly 60 different projects gathering multi-disciplinary R&D teams (specialists in metallurgy, coatings, forming, corrosion resistance, ...).
Maizières Products centre is seeking a research engineer with successful completion of a post-graduate programme in mechanical engineering (and/or in structural mechanics) to be enrolled within the R&D research group dedicated to the Packaging market.
Your Role
From a general point of view, you will be in charge of steering R&D projects (and coordinating the associated R&D team) involving internal or external partners in the field of the qualification of new steel products (including mainly the product range of decarbonized steel products), the development of steel solutions, the can design and prototyping applied to steels for packaging.
You will ideally combine advanced mechanical engineering skills, ideally knowledge in sheet metal forming process and high level scientific computing / numerical modelling capabilities to contribute to the development of advanced steel solutions and co-engineering projects to achieve win-win value creation with our customers on the packaging market.
This position will offer the opportunity to work in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary environment with people working on forming, coatings, corrosion and metallurgy and will provide a wide autonomy for technical actions in any domain with the different project stakehoders (pilot plant, development and commercial team, ...). Cooperative work with other ArcelorMittal R&D community or external partners is required.
You Will Be Expected To:
- Coordinate all activities of R&D support to new product development (steel substrate as well as coating) requiring formability assessment and in-use properties validation.
- Lead the qualification phase (formability and usage properties assessment) of new ranges of product of steels for packaging (including decarbonized steel products for lower CO2 emissions impact) and preparation of approval technical file for new product before go decision for shipment to final customers,
- Steer the implementation of tailored experimental testing / characterization methodologies for packaging applications for a reliable new product design validation on time,
- Develop new steel solutions in close collaboration with our customers and/or external relevant partners (canmaking machine suppliers, toolmaker, filler, high-level academic partners, …),
- Provide ArcelorMittal customers with technical supports for continuous performances improvement and cost-effectiveness, co-engineering initiatives or long-term collaborations based on prototyping, experimental or FEA assistance,
- Implement more sophisticated numerical tools to strengthen our knowledge on the relationship between mechanical properties of steels for packaging, their formability and the in-use properties of steel containers,
- Implement innovative forming processes in breakthrough with the existing ones to promote our steel product ranges;
You will gradually take the responsibility of managing research projects and technical supports to customers.
You will be assisted by research technicians who will report to you.
Punctual business travels mainly in Europe are to be expected.
