The COO organization at Microsoft plays a pivotal role in driving operational excellence and transformation across the company. Its mission centers on creating a blueprint for transforming Microsoft through AI and continuous improvement (CI). We’re seeking a forward‑thinking Software Engineer II with deep experience in AIOps‑centric, cloud data architecture. You’ll design and deliver the data foundations for semi and fully autonomous fraud and abuse detection, leveraging LLMs, agentic AI, retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, and low‑latency context retrieval. Your work will power real‑time decisioning and platform resilience by building scalable, high‑throughput systems that integrate diverse real‑time and near‑real‑time data sources, enabling agents to reason, adapt, and act in dynamic environments.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement data systems that support Agentic AI workflows, including RAG pipelines and semantic memory. 
  • Design and optimize vector database solutions for context-aware retrieval and embedding storage. 
  • Build real-time and near-real-time data ingestion pipelines from diverse sources (e.g., telemetry, APIs, user interactions). 
  • Develop automation frameworks for data processing, transformation, and enrichment. 
  • Collaborate with data engineering, data science, and analytics teams to deliver seamless integration across data pipelines, model training, LLMs, inference services, MCP servers, and continuous feedback loops. 
  • Implement semantic search capabilities using embeddings, transformers, and large dataset optimization techniques. 
  • Ensure data quality, lineage, and governance across agentic systems. 
  • Monitor and improve system performance, scalability, and reliability in production environments.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on data systems or AI infrastructure. 
  • 1+ years experience with distributed data processing (e.g., Spark, Flink) and real-time streaming (e.g., Kafka, Pulsar). 
  • 2+ years experience of data modeling, ETL, and pipeline automation. 

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering
  • Hands-on experience with vector databases (e.g., FAISS, Weaviate, Pinecone) and semantic search. 
  • Familiarity with LLM techniques, embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation. 
  • Exposure to agentic AI concepts, autonomous systems, or reinforcement learning. 
  • Experience with cloud-native data architectures (Azure, AWS, GCP). 
  • Contributions to open-source AI or data infrastructure projects. 
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years experience in business analytics, data science, software development, data modeling, or data engineering OR equivalent experience.

Data Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
