Process Automation Competency And Group Leader

Intent/Value

  • Provide Process Automation (PA) consulting and technical services in support of top line growth, asset effectiveness improvement programs, and capital projects.
  • Validate the successful operation of process automation applications and solutions to realize the objectives of these technical programs and projects.
  • Work extensively with Operations, Process Engineering and Improvement, project leaders and team members, full-service design contractors, and other technology consultants and functional specialists to ensure business needs are met through the appropriate application of process automation technology and engineering.
  • Stay abreast of and deploy process automation emerging technologies to positively impact business outcome.
  • Provide direct administrative and supervisory leadership for the assigned staff of the Midland Process Automation group including both engineers and technicians.
  • Lead performance management and personnel development for their direct reports.
  • Provide training, succession planning, and personnel hiring to ensure Process Automation staff are sized to meet fit for purpose goals and qualified to deliver the overall PA mission and vision.
  • Work with others in PA roles to leverage PA competency throughout the business and to create a PA vision for the Midland site.

Accountabilities

  • Develop, implement and communicate Process Automation technical strategy for the Midland site for Honeywell and Rockwell platforms while ensuring consistent understanding and implementation across the site.
  • Collaborate with the Central Expertise Process Automation focal points to ensure alignment with corporate Process Automation policies, standards, and goals.
  • Champion and ensure effective use and consistent implementation of process automation principles, standards, guidance, solutions, and best practices across the site.
  • Champion the resource management and people development for Process Automation personnel by applying leadership skills, knowledge, and experience.
  • Own Midland site Process Automation budget and yearly planning process.
  • Own Midland site Process Automation capital planning process.
  • Identify and guide the implementation of process automation improvement programs and capital projects that have positive, sustainable and quantifiable financial impact on business performance.
  • Support or lead process automation related activities of capital and improvement projects.
  • Serve as owner of process automation system infrastructure, programming, security, and related management of change activity at the site.
  • Provide required and recommended Process Automation training curricula to ensure continued expertise development on the Honeywell and Rockwell platforms and ensure training and development opportunities are afforded to Process Automation employees for career development.
  • Ensure Midland’s compliance with Process Automation regulatory compliance (instrumented protective systems, alarm management, cybersecurity).
  • Create an environment that fosters team and individual empowerment.
  • Support implementation and ongoing effectiveness of global work processes, management systems, enabling technologies and roles.
  • Enforce implementation of the appropriate process automation and control strategies and solutions for Corteva manufacturing processes and equipment involved.
  • Accountable for guiding teams or individuals in setting stretch goals and coaching them to achieve performance that sets a competitive standard.
  • Support of day-to-day operations to meet business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with Process Automation personnel company-wide via the various Communities of Practice to develop and share best practices.
  • Interface with Site Improvement Team to define and implement process control strategy improvements.
  • Support 24/7 plant coverage and uptime needs.
  • Understand and implement process automation improvements to meet process safety and regulatory compliance needs.
  • Review and own the implementation of global PA standards across the site.
  • Communicate Honeywell and Rockwell updates and developments relevant to plant operations to site stakeholders on a routine frequency.
  • Interface with Research and Development in pre-commercial product development and site trials to understand process control needs.
  • Ensure aspects of process automation projects are included in global project system.
  • Prioritize and budget process automation projects with site/regional budgets.
  • Participate in various phases of capital projects including front end loading, factory acceptance testing, and commissioning.
  • Lead or participate in various phases of capital and improvement projects including scoping, front end loading, design, simulation, testing, training, commissioning, and start-up.
  • Interface with Quality to ensure process automation strategies and technologies are aligned.
  • Collaborate with Information and Operations Technology on site process control network design and cybersecurity implementation.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Engineering (e.g., Chemical, Electrical, Computer, or similar) and at least seven years of process control work experience and training in the chemical industry.
  • Demonstrated skills in DCS and PLCs including specifying equipment, configuring network data points, building graphics, programming ladder logic, and performing system backups.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and develop batch sequencing (ISA-88).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements including safety instrumented systems and management of change procedures.
  • Demonstrated project leadership skills including functional requirement specifications, factory acceptance testing, commissioning, and startup.

Preferred Experience (But Not Required)

  • Previous administrative people leadership

Process Safety

  • Ensure development and availability of Process Automation expertise for participation in Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) and Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) reviews.
  • Ensure development and availability of Instrumented Protective System (IPS) Functional Safety Expert (FSE) and/or IPS Focal Point to ensure all IPS requirements are met including Safety Requirements Specification and Functional Safety Assessment and/or maintenance and training of IPSs on site.

Continuous Improvement

  • The Midland Technical Services (MTS) PA Technical Competency and Group Leader requires awareness of Continuous Improvement (CI) methodologies and the use of basic tools (such as 5S, fishbone diagrams, etc.) to assist with strategy development and problem solving.
