Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is looking to hire a Trades/Utilites Mechanic for a position with its Facilities Services and Planning administration.

The Trades Technician Reports directly to the Superintendent of the Field, and in their absence, the Deputy Director of Maintenance and Operations. This position oversees facility maintenance and repairs for their assigned district. The role is responsible for ensuring that all DMV facilities within the district remain fully functional, safe, and compliant with state and federal regulations.

This includes managing and performing repairs across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and other essential building systems. Additionally, the position supports emergency preparedness, coordinates with external vendors for specialized maintenance needs, and upholds DMV and OSHA safety standards to provide a secure, operational environment for employees and customers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • • Knowledge of building operations, construction related and facility best practices.
  • • Understanding of building materials, methods, and tools used in construction.
  • • Familiarity with the national building code and regulations, as well as compliance requirements at federal, state, and local levels.
  • • Skilled in reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics for construction and maintenance projects.
  • • Skilled in coordinating and managing multiple projects, timelines, and maintaining compliance with safety and construction standards.
  • • Capable of identifying problems and implementing solutions.
  • • Competent in making independent decisions, especially in the absence of higher management, including emergency repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • • Proficient in using mechanical tools, electronic testing devices, repair, ensuring that all equipment meets operational standards.
  • • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues quickly and effectively.
  • • Strong communication and collaboration skills, enabling effective coordination with multiple stakeholders.
  • • Proficient in data entry, analysis, and reporting using DMV systems to maintain accurate records and inform management decisions, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
  • • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation, with strong oral and written communication skills for reporting and compliance.

Additional Considerations

•Familiarity with towing utility trailers and operating large vehicles in various conditions.
•Has obtained a Masters License in construction class A, B, or C and/or equivalent.
